I can't remember. Wasn't it just that they didn't want Buffy to have it?
Buffy 4: Grr. Arrgh.
This is where we talk about Buffy the Vampire Slayer! No spoilers though?if you post one by accident, an admin will delete it. This thread is NO LONGER NAFDA. Please don't discuss current Angel events here.
Was it ever established what use the Excalibraxe would have been to Caleb and the First Evil had Buffy not taken it away?
Good for chopping.
Wasn't it just that they didn't want Buffy to have it?
I think that's it.
I think I just remember Plei saying it, and that could have been part of my problem with the definition. Plei writes fic I would swear was canon, if only I could find the right tape.
I don't remember saying it, FWIW, but I do remember seeing that Joss said it.
Jossing, as I learned it in the ficverse (like everything else, it would seem that there are multiple meanings to the term) means that something previously considered possible has been made unpossible within the confines of canon. This is a very sloppy definition, I realize.
Retcon's an old comics term, IIRC. (BTW, I'm still finding myself stuck in TLA and FLA land, despite work having been over for almost two weeks. It's a thing. Mea Culpa. And stuff. Honest, I'll start spelling things out in full ADN.)

You are the least spelling-out person I know.

Buffy would never have known about it, let alone acquired it, if Caleb and crew hadn't dug for it. I'd like to think they had some reason, but I've never come up with one. Just another plot hole, I guess.

GoT to that, I suppose.
I did have to explain a few TLAs to sweet innocent co-workers last out.
Now, I have a long history of wanking stuff, and am sometimes not half bad, but I'm totally copping to making this up as I go along.
Perhaps, if Caleb had gotten the Scythe, he would have been able to tap into it's power (lots of dead Slayers), and maybe even hijack the power of The Slayer (or choose the next Slayer?), or something like that (particularly if all the Potentials and the Slayer were dead). So, instead of a big scary that can be any dead person it wants with a super-stong disciple, it's a big scary yadda yadda without a strong, established opponent.
Taking it further, maybe it would allow the First to possess the Slayer, or exert a significant amount of power over her.
But none of that is canon at all.
Just like my How We Get to Fray explanation. Ok, even less canon than that.
