On Cecily and Halfrek-I just thought that was a meta joke for Buffy fans because they used the same actress.

Yes, I think it was Marti, but whomever it was, I distinctly remember the comment. They liked the actress, wanted to use her as Halfrek, and so put in her, "William?" -- as a nod to the fans.

They didn't realize so many fans would take the nod as a finger. I just thought it was fun. It could have been much more interesting though.

Okay, okay, so it meant nothing, it was just an inside joke...well I love those anyway as long as they're clever...personally I thought the "Giles not touching anything" bit would have been clever had they just done it for, like, one episode, but instead they dragged it out too long, to the point where it was absurd that no one would have seen him touching anything unless he was the First. I did like the bit w/ the Bringer's shoes squeaking however...a reminder of how the First was impressive in its' omniscience, but had a lot of incompetent help.

One note though: I think that if Halfrek had "daddy issues", they should have made her turn out to be Cecily...it makes sense that a young woman from the Victorian era would have father issues...Victorians not really known for their kindness and sensitivity towards women and children...why oh why did they screw up what could have been an interesting story w/ a reference to the Crimean War? Oh well...

What about the time where people read way too much about what Doc said to Spike, that he thought he was the guy downtown or something. I read so many theories that he was cloned or that there was a Spike bot or a Spike double somewhere.

Yeah, the Chanterelle-Lily-Anne continuity was lovely and showed great character development. There's no reason all those smart writers couldn't have thought up something to move Cecily into Halfrek -- instead of just winding the fans up.

For "people read way too much," I almost always insert "the writers dropped the ball." I'm uncharitable that way.

I really liked the Chanterelle/Lily/Anne continuity as well minus the episode of Angel she was in with the shelter that ranks at the almost bottom of my ranking of all ME episodes.

The thing is, Mutant Enemy spoiled us with little touches like Sandy, Chanterelle/Lily/Anne, etc. If we'd never been exposed to that kind of care WRT the storytelling in the first place, we could have just handwaved stuff off the same way most genre shows require.

That's what it feels like. I was fine with taking Jenny Calander and making her Janna of the Kalderash tribe or whatever, because they made it happen, made it work.

Giles' no touching story could have worked without much more effort, even if they'd just played it for laughs with us, instead of on us.

If we saw each Scoob, one by one, noticing Giles was strange, and not touching anything, but we saw Giles touching plenty of stuff when they weren't around, it would have been fun for us, instead of annoying. A cheap laugh? Probably, but still a laugh, and a laugh that could have still explained underlying tensions within the gang. I'm still angry that the FE could appear as Buffy, but that they never used that to stir up any trouble between Buffy and the Scoobies before they realized their villain was the FE.

There were some bright spots regarding this in S7 though, I thought. Mostly the bringing up of Xander's Big Lie and other things that seem Ultimate Drew-related.

It was a happy thing to listen to his interview on the succubus club and hear him say how when he got the job he watched every episode and just made a big ol continuity list of all the stuff he wanted to see happen. And then he said "I thought that's what writers on TV shows did." And I was like "Yeah, well, don't they?" Guess not.

He also mentioned though how closely he worked with Joss on all the eps he wrote - so the continuity goodness that did sneak in wasn't all just him.

Also, he had the best "meeting Joss for the first time" story I have ever heard.
