Greece's financial crisis threatens to take down all of Western civilization - a civilization they themselves founded. A rather tragic irony - which is something they also invented. - Jon Stewart

I dislike the social capital concept. IMO it's a snotty concept used as an excuse/reason to be rude. I think a pecking order exists and social capital is just a euphamistic way of saying that. Why not just say it?

I think that's a good point, Java.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

I don't see there's anything euphemistic about social capital. Calling it a pecking order (or a gazebo) won't change a thing.

Not javachik

Java -- I think what surprised you isn't actually anything new or different. So I don't know if it should be put in our documentation. It's just sort of a thing.

Oh.

I think of this when people write the word maroon. (Wrote a paper on them once. Also, have flown over Cockpit Country. Otherworldly place. )

Am having a crap evening. Someone tell me to go home.

So come, my friends, be not afraid/We are so lightly here/It is in love that we are made; In love we disappear

none, this is still the only one. People keep saying, "there are other communities," and I've looked dulsitorily at others but haven't found any that don't have weird threads and restrictions on the # of posts per 15 minute period.

I re-found this place (I'd lurked at TT) through a RL conversation at an event arranged on another community where half the people (at the time) acting as mods were people I'd known ages ago, back when I was running single-line boards.

I think, back in the day, back when boards were generally local things, there was an expectation that people would know/meet each other in real life. So, I guess for me, there's the knowledge that there's going to be some off-board crossover, and such. It's always a little bit of a paradigm shift without a clutch (the only expression other than Stapler Misfire I've been unable to shake from Dilbert) to realize that other people here haven't had online as their main way of interacting with people for most of their adult lives. And, like that guy in Memento, I keep forgetting that.

I don't see there's anything euphemistic about social capital. Calling it a pecking order (or a gazebo) won't change a thing.

This, yes.

Not having has never been the thing I've regretted most in my life. Not trying is.

That wording sounds good, Jon.

What is even happening?

Calling it a pecking order (or a gazebo) won't change a thing.

I don't know. Calling it a gazebo, might change a lot. Think of the metaphor!

HEC: Your gazebo needs re-roofing.
CINDY: Well, some of the paint is chipping off of your gazebo.
HEC: My gazebo is bigger than your gazebo.
CINDY: Yeah, well my gazebo provides cooler shade.
HEC: What.Ev. My gazebo is octagonal.

Remember that the frontier of the Rebellion is everywhere. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward.

I posted (once) in the first Buffy thread.

We're all getting played with, babe. -Weird Barbie

Also, Sean, KristIn. I know, I know, she doesn't seem to care, but she should! It's a name! It's hallowed!

Thank you ita -- I do care. I just don't generally see it as worth making a fuss over.

No hard feelings, Shawn K. (evil grin)
