So basically, we're being asked to create a dedicated thread not just as a place to discuss SPN, but also so disinterested people won't have to be exposed to the discussion. And I honestly don't know if that's a valid reason for a dedicated thread.
It's not that the people who would use it want the thread or are asking for it. It feels like being asked to leave from a party we were invited to in the first place. So yeah, I am touchy about this.
My initial reaction is that SPN seems to generate enough post volume to warrant its own thread. Most of the time I am amused by the discussion and flailing, and the show being discussed in Boxed Set encourages me to give it a try. It does overwhelm the thread at times, which hasn't been too big a deal for me.
What other shows are being discussed there now? I'm watching Eureka and Doctor Who. When I go into the thread I want to see the new posts being related to shows I watch, but I either skim or skip the SPN depending on my time constraints.
On the fence. I'll sit back and listen to how the people watching the show feel.

Exactly. There are lots of shows discussed in Boxed Set I don't watch. I skim to see if I might be interested in watching, and if I'm not, well, that's what the scroll bar is for.
(See, Lee got to do the "ITA" thing. Who will by my hero?)
I think if I'm to be honest, it kind of boils down to my having a strong, "Suck it up," streak for things up to a certain threshold of gravity - both toward myself, and toward others. So, I'm not going to get bent out of shape when something reasonable is discussed that, for reasons personal to me, doesn't interest me. I'll just suck it up and scroll on by. I think other people should do the same thing - stressing, again, that what they're expected to skip on by is a reasonable topic for a given thread. Which I think SPN in Boxed Set is.
I don't think that just because I think that, everyone should agree with me, by the way (but, feel free!). I also don't think there's anything wrong with saying, "This bugs me." I just... much of the time, my response, whether posted or not, is going to be, "Well, this is too bad. But it fits here, so scroll on by."
And all of that to say that I don't think SPN should get its own thread just because not everyone wants to read about it in Boxed Set. I think the fit is perfect in Boxed Set. So, clearly, I cannot choose the glass in front of you.
But. It does get a lot of discussion. So, clearly, I cannot choose the glass in front of me.
(All of this actually leads me to thinking that I hope ita is doing well if she's in the hospital this weekend, because I keep expecting her to jump in with some numbers pointing out that SPN actually doesn't generate any more posts than X, Y, or Z for a given period.)
But, really, if the people who are discussing it (which includes me sometimes) aren't arguing in favor of a dedicated thread, then I don't see it as a need.
I heart Jen. IJS. And I would heart her no matter which side she argued for, as long as she did it with such articulation and Princess Bride quotage.
And I second the well-wishes for ita.
Ed. because a parenthesis is not an I.

I am doing it again, too, this time with you and you can be (are) my hero, if it helps.
and you can be my hero, if it helps
Totally helps! Is better, even.
I heart Jen.
D'awww. So very much backatcha.
I'd participate in a dedicated thread. I love Eureka, Doctor Who and SPN, but I don't go into boxed set because I'm always behind on one or the other of them. I don't do the skim over with eyes glazed at all well and every time I've gone in I've gotten spoiled for something.
I'm sorry that this feels forced to some of you, but it fills me with glee. I've really missed my board.
Much as I'd participate (and I would) in a solo thread, I hate the feeling that a show that both fits under the original perimeters of the Boxed Set Feel (fangirl candy, lots of glee and excitement, see also early Smallville and due South) and generates a lot of talk and conversions (note that a lot of the conversation today was with recent viewers) is being pushed out because it gets on people's nerves that we have the nerve to talk about it.
Mayhaps I'm cranky, but to be perfectly frank, I have to skip past wads of posts on shows I don't watch all the time. It's a function of having a combined thread, and a combined thread will never be all things to all people.
Is that any different from how the LotR threads got started?
(It occurs to me as I reach for post that that could be taken as pointed. It's not.)
