still watching the debate though it seemed settled very amicably last night
I feel like I need to point out that a few people coming to apparent agreement is not the same as the issue being settled for the whole board. I didn't even read this discussion until today, and it bothers me to think that it was all "settled" before I had voiced an opinion, or even formed one.
Which is not to say that I am against consensus. We seem to have one as far as "sockpuppets should have real IDs in their profiles" goes. How to implement that is still under debate.

Personally, I think the policies live in the FAQ. They are hard and fast, we mean it, so do it. The etiquette, to me, is suggestions as to how to get along with everyone.

Isn't the etiquette section where there is the policy against persistent demon-like behavior?
The FAQ has seemed to me to be more informational, and the Etiquette thing more expectational, if that makes any sense.
This is how I see the issue too. I don't think it has anything to do with regulating humor. People can make all the jokes they want. They just need to put their real ID in their sockpuppet profile.
Yeah, except we want the names in there so people won't feel left out of a joke. Are we going to make Teppy and Perkins explain their whole "You suck" riff, that obviously happened when they spent time together? I'm left out of that joke.

I don't think the names in profile is because some people feel "left out" of a joke, Cindy. It's because some people are really bothered and/or annoyed by sockpuppets. Period. For a variety of reasons stated. So it gives those people the ability to see behind the mask. Which may have very little to do with understanding the joke.

ok, the FAQ says nothing about not having a log-in of (for example) Jese H.
The FAQ links to the Etiquette page to address board behavior (Under How to Block a Poster), it says nothing itself.
It says nothing about Spamming.
