Voting Discussion: We're Screwing In Light Bulbs AIFG!

We open it up, we talks the talk, we votes, we shuts it down. This thread is to free up Bureaucracy for daily details as we hammer out the Big Issues towards a vote. Open only when a proposal has been made and seconded according to Buffista policy (Which we voted on!). If this thread is closed, hie thee to Bureaucracy instead!

Now let us crush something soft and watch it fountain blood. That is a girlish thing to want to do, yes?

I've never actually understood the objection to the dreaded general tv thread, but since I'm generally anti-pro and and I don't watch general tv, eh well, not gonna argue for it either.

The proposed thread, on the other hand, just sounds untenable and somewhat un-Buffista-like to me -- if it's to be just recs and not just discussion, there would have to be some kind of policing. And discussing is what we do. Endlessly. About everything. So I can imagine one of two things -- it'd be a discussion thread with extra added attempts to natterstomp and complaints that we're not supposed to have a general tv thread, or people wouldn't bother with it because there's no discussion happening there and they've already made their recs in natter.

"I keep to a strict diet of ill-advised enthusiasm and heartfelt regret." Leigh Bardugo

Clarification question:

Before we talk about a new thread, can I get a quick check on the following:

We're on a dedicated server, correct?

And are we here temporarily while we figger out the ish with MYSQL? Or are we planning on being here long term or for the long long haul?

Cause those issues would possibly influence how I feel about a thread where people just recommend TV shows.

Amych sounds convincing to me.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

We are on a dedicated server.

We are looking at being able to change the system so we don't need to be on a dedicated server for the long haul.

I don't think we should lock ourselves into a dedicated server until someone wins the lottery and takes care of our charges in perpetuity.

What is even happening?

I didn't realize this. I thought it was along the more general tv thread line, and that we were going to judge from what was hot, to see if we wanted any new threads dedicated to any specific show.

I don't know that I'll vote for a rec thread. I am not usually anti, but it seems to me we already sort of rec in Natter, when we post about our shows. I could see having such a conversation here, if a proposal was so crafted. What I mean by that is, if someone proposed we have a new thread dedicated to a show, and we voted on (say): The OC, Alias, 24, Joan of Arcadia, Whatever-Show, and gave the winner a thread.

If I only had a brain...

The only advantage I see is that it's an archive of sorts: unlike Natter, you can go to the thread a month later and find the recommendations when you want them.

"Faded like the lilac, he thought."

I have no opinion on this. It may be the first time ever.

"Faded like the lilac, he thought."

I always wanted a recs mechanism for all media, sort of like where the fic recs live, but more organized. Cause I never could go back and figure out which books/movies/albums I was supposed to check out but never did back when we were having the conversation. Suppose this would be something like that for the teevee.

Like crack_van, for TV?

I just don't see the point.

Remember that the frontier of the Rebellion is everywhere. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward.

Sounds OK in theory, but I don't think it will work in practice, since

  • There's no way we can keep natter out of the thread.
  • There isn't a whole lot of teevee to post about. When the thread is created, everyone will sound in on the shows they like and dislike, then there will be nothing to talk about.

Of course, given how the networks are treating shows these days, the interesting show mentioned a month ago might be cancelled.
