We open it up, we talks the talk, we votes, we shuts it down. This thread is to free up Bureaucracy for daily details as we hammer out the Big Issues towards a vote. Open only when a proposal has been made and seconded according to Buffista policy (Which we voted on!). If this thread is closed, hie thee to Bureaucracy instead!

Heh. Movies got added pretty easily. I had to lobby hard for a Music thread, because the anti-proliferationistas had started to take a stand.
Which is why we don't have a general TV thread to discuss other shows. Though personally I feel kind of constrained, and wish I had a place to talk about something like...Justice League or Adult Swim. So some minor resentment that we've got a Farscape/due South/Smallville thread which has become the stealth Stargate thread.
There's an odd combination of denial and hand-waving ("This is NOT a genre TV Hoyay slanted thread. Just the shows listed. Okay, Jack is a woobie...") and then it's scattered in a weird mash across the threads. Wonderfalls in Minearvearse, whitefonted OC discussion in Natter. Some Justice League talk in Jossiverse in Other Media (the default Comics thread, though again - not listed as such).
It is not, however, a big deal to me. But I get cognitive dissonance from the obvious interest in focused discussion of other shows and the continued pressure to spread it around somehow.
Concentrating political discussion, even if civil, will lead to much higher collective board blood pressure, which could affect other threads.
I am not necessarily for the thread, but I am not convinced by this particular argument, in part because I know a lot of us head for other threads when politics come up in Natter. I am pretty sure we got a few more people posting in Bitches, who were fleeing from Natter during Caroma's last days on this board. I understand the discussion will be concentrated. But if it is civil, I don't understand how it would cause higher collective board blood pressure. If it is not civil, I am not sure I am convinced it will raise the board's b.p. any more than it does when it gets un-civil in Natter.
I do agree on the one hand with people who think keeping it in Natter helps diffuse things. But sometimes, I know my bp has gone up because of the people who are not talking politics, are bothered by a political discussion, and make posts in which they say "ignoring disturbing political talk," even when I'm not the one making any political posts.

I think it was vice-versa, Hec. I remember practically blowing a gasket over the movies thread, NSM over music.

Me too. I'm hoping we can address that once a)Angel is over and b)our server/code problems have been solved.
Selfishly, if we could only add one new thread, I would not want it to be a politics thread. I would want it to be a general TV thread, because we're much more of a pop-culture/culture/arts oriented board than anything else (except, of course, the world's top producer of Natter).

I like the scattered talk. Of course, I'm guilty of it, but hey. I like the fact that threads of conversation pop up wherever we are. It adds to the feel of community, for me, where I'm feeling more and more that the thread spread has, in concert with increased numbers of people and speed of posting, lead to the everyone's alone in a crowd feel. Plus, seems people do more picking and sticking with threads, so that they become not so much subcultures, but completely independent cultures.

I need a new one of those.
I agree Cindy. TV is our raison d'etre.

B.P. will be raised more because there will be more political discussion than there otherwise would be without the new thread.
I have nothing new to add. I find myself nodding vigorously everytime Hec posts anything.
Oh. One thing. Anyone who thinks Natter will become more manageable with less political talk is kidding themselves (IMO). History has shown that adding a new thread does not diminish the Natter. Natter volume continued to grow no matter what other threads we threw in it's path. It's like a virtual Blob but without the young Steve McQueen.

I'm not convinced of the board's b.p. being worse, because I guess I feel it will be easier for individuals to avoid it, when they feel their b.p. rising, and they won't feel pushed out of a thread like Natter, where they might want to unwind.
I guess I'm also not convinced that there will be that much more discussion (admittedly though, if I had to bet, I would bet there would be more). I guess what I'm not convinced of is that the increase will be appreciable. The Jossverse in Other Media has only generated about 1600 posts in over a year and a half. The first Movies thread opened on Feb. 20, of last year. We're only only halfway through the second thread in a year+ later. The first music thread opened Jan. 3, of last year. We're about 2000 posts into the 2nd thread, over a year later. ***edited because I forgot the counter-point*** On the other hand, Minearverse is growing like Natter's bastard son on steroids, so I can see why people who are convinced there will be more political talk, hold that opinion.
Again though, I'd rather have a TV thread than a politics thread. That alone, is making me lean towards the no politics position, because I would hate to see a TV thread shot down, because of proliferation concerns.
