Voting Discussion: We're Screwing In Light Bulbs AIFG!

We open it up, we talks the talk, we votes, we shuts it down. This thread is to free up Bureaucracy for daily details as we hammer out the Big Issues towards a vote. Open only when a proposal has been made and seconded according to Buffista policy (Which we voted on!). If this thread is closed, hie thee to Bureaucracy instead!

I was charmed (albeit somewhat perplexed) by the fannish sensibility of many of the music choices -- it's like the director was trying to vid Canada. --loligo on the Olympic Opening Ceremonies

Fannish TV as a name takes me right to Ikea. It goes like this in my brain:

Fannish TV. Finnish TV. Finns are near Swedes. Swedish TV. Swedish Furniture. IKEA!

Okay, if we do this I want this in the blurb.

In the ever-popular Universe Of Which I Am Queen, we would handle spoilers in a Fannish TV thread by having no future spoilers, posting allowed as soon as aired, West Coasters read at your own peril during those three hours. I'm very strongly against any kind of a whitefonting time limit.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

The OC isn't genre.

But it's got fans. (And a rudimentary fandom with fanfiction and fansites.) So is it "fannish TV" or not?

I'm really not clear on how we'd keep this from becoming, as Askye said, a junk drawer. To me, it feels like creating a General TV thread with a different name. [massive x-post]

Maybe we need to call it Genre TV.

Why did Darth Vader cross the road? To get to the Dark Side!

ita wore pink? Oh dear. Either msbelle is wearing black, or there is a serious imbalance in the universe. If we don't act quick, the FC (the First Chartreuse) will take advantage of this rift and try to take over the world.

We are Buffistas. This isn't our first apocalypse. -- Pix

I think even if we don't intend to create a general TV thread, the fact is that creating a thread with more general interest covering a variety of shows results in people talking about other shows there.

We tend to discuss new topics in the thread most closely related to them. So I expect that if we didn't have a Farscape thread, Farscape would have been discussed occasionally in Firefly (where it was anyway, IIRC) and/or the DueSouth thread (where the SG-1 discussion appears to live).

That's the likely way of it. So while we don't want to create a new general tv thread, consolidation of three genre tv threads into one genre tv thread is going to make that one thread the closest thing we have to a general tv thread. I think.

S to the A -- using they/them pronouns!

Is there a way to do this without creating an overly general thread?

We could include an explanation in the thread description and perhaps the FAQ that the thread was created for genre tv, specifically for but not limited to Smallville, due South, Stargate, etc. It would be up to the thread participants to keep it in check, which I don't forsee a problem with.

Is an Ikea thread specific enough?

Sure. Plus it's a cute name.

What would it be used for and how?

Discussing the specific television shows mentioned above, along with wherever the discussion happens to ramble. I think the how is for the people who talk in the thread and not so much a Lightbulb/B'cy issue.

Is my dehydrated brain creating contingencies for problems which don't exist and most likely won't?

Possibly, but the worry is well-founded considering the trouble we have pinning down what we want.

And how did bo-bita and I both coincidentally wear pink today? Is that about planetary alignment?

Check your horoscopes.

Yeah, I'm a little concerned that if we just throw everything in together, we've gone and created a general TV thread, anyway.

I think that was my primary motivation for suggesting categorized threads.

I'm happy to go with whatever.

However, think while I type, even if we do wind up creating a more or less general TV thread, if we do it while eliminating the other three threads, I think we zero out the balance on both sides - yes, we risk increased SQL connections (the primary technical problem) but we also eliminate discussion across three other threads, which Kristen pointed out will help, even if those three threads are not heavily trafficked.

Not if the new thread gets more traffic than the current three combined, which is my worry.
