Voting Discussion: We're Screwing In Light Bulbs AIFG!
We open it up, we talks the talk, we votes, we shuts it down. This thread is to free up Bureaucracy for daily details as we hammer out the Big Issues towards a vote. Open only when a proposal has been made and seconded according to Buffista policy (Which we voted on!). If this thread is closed, hie thee to Bureaucracy instead!
It's just that when I woke up this morning, it felt like the fairly rational discussion we were having yesterday has become a much more emotional one overnight.
Two things: I think the spoilerphobes caught up and started weighing in more, for whom this is more of an emotional issue and B) the discussion matured to the point that more people caught on that the proposal was more meta than this summer's Big Casting Spoiler, et al.
I also think that anti-spoilers are a relatively recent phenomenon, primarily caused by the demise of BtVS, with ripple effects. I'd hazard that this is why they seem so new and annoying to many on both sides of the discussion.
I might just be projecting, but I'd guess that some of the above is true for what you're seeing now, Sean.
I might take offense at being characterised as emotional rather than rational... But I won't.
I'm sorry, I don't mean this to be a direct accusation at anyone Elena, or any particular side. It's directed at all of us, and I include me in that.
I just want to make sure it's not going to be at the expense of the unspoiled.
Right, okay... But we feel like not being allowed to discuss it freely comes at our expense.
That's got to be dramatic license, or summat.
Are you calling me a drama queen???
t snaps fingers extravagantly and swirls from the room in a giant flourish of billowy clothing.
I guess I'm still stuck on the "this will not be a spoiler before the show airs" part of it.
But why can't it wait until the promo airs? Sean was saying that casting news changes all the time at the last minutes. What if that happens here?
but keep in mind that Bitchy Fic and SB are both NAFDA threads, and I'm not going to not talk about it when it's not a spoiler.
Um. When is it not a spoiler? Seriously, what do you mean?
Here's another question... You write a fic that has either or both of the casting 'spoilers' in it. Do you put a spoiler warning on it when you send it to the lists?
Right, okay... But we feel like not being allowed to discuss it freely comes at our expense.
Okay. I understand that.
What do you suggest we do about it?
I wish well publicized changes to the main cast could not be considered spoilers because I honestly do not see how they could ruin show enjoyment since i t will be out soon even according to current spoiler rules anyway. It's going waaaay too far to me.
I complain and poke fun at the serious spoilerphobes in my home topic, but I really never want to do anything that would seriously mess up anyone's enjoyment of the show or the boards.
So I might be waffling on this issue.
I'm way more concerned about this strange anti-spoiler rule and not being able to discuss casting on Tim's show.

(bolding mine)
Some of us have explained how it does change/ruin/diminish our enjoyment of the show. That is a fact, it does. It just does in the same why that for you it just doesn't.
And if it's going to be out soon according to the current spoiler rules anyway, why are we doing this again?
Seriously - how long a wait is this going to end up being for those in the know?
Sean was saying that casting news changes all the time at the last minutes. What if that happens here?
Well, for one, it seems unlikely, because the One Big One in particular has already been publicised in WB promo materials. They've already released posters, which to me (and possibly me alone) seems equivalent to an aired promo.
But for two, if this one changes at the last minute, this news that people have already been upset over was nothing to be upset over.
Continuing with my thoughts on this matter. I will be fine with whatever is decided because I am not passionate one way or the other on the changes being discussed.
I like the 2/3 notion a lot. IMO if the network is promoting and Joss is freely discussing a casting issue then the pleasure (or dread) of anticipation outweighs the desire for possible HSQ. (for me)
Perhaps the Lite thread can be loosened up a little. Everything being whitefonted seems odd in a thread that was created to discuss such matters. It would be nice to be able to speculate on how the creative staff is going to write around DB shaving his head to play the goody two shoes lost twin of Lex. There really is no place to discuss current, former, or future ME players’ outside projects except in hard core spoilers now. I would enjoy such discussions as I would probably be unaware of these projects otherwise.
Um. When is it not a spoiler? Seriously, what do you mean?
To clarify: when the promo airs, or if this motion passes, I will talk about it.
Here's another question... You write a fic that has either or both of the casting 'spoilers' in it. Do you put a spoiler warning on it when you send it to the lists?
It depends on the list. Seriously. They all have their own rules. I mean, my author's notes will mention it mainly as a context guideline. It also depends on the story. I see plenty of things with spoilers come through lists with no warning, which is occasionally amusing, but as most of what I write these days is AU, it hasn't come up for a while.
Generally, I only send fic with major spoilers to Silverlake, and in that case, it's labelled "spoiler/speculation based"
That's neither here nor there, however, as that's not here.
This discussion pertains to this space, not to the rules of the various lists.
As for what I propose to do about it, *I* simply plan to support the current proposal, and vote yes on it.
