Giles, if you would like to get by in American society, then you are going to have to follow our traditions. You're the patriarch. You have to host the festivities, or it's all meaningless.

Voting Discussion: We're Screwing In Light Bulbs AIFG!

We open it up, we talks the talk, we votes, we shuts it down. This thread is to free up Bureaucracy for daily details as we hammer out the Big Issues towards a vote. Open only when a proposal has been made and seconded according to Buffista policy (Which we voted on!). If this thread is closed, hie thee to Bureaucracy instead!

Now let us crush something soft and watch it fountain blood. That is a girlish thing to want to do, yes?

that was on WX before we had the thread proliferation issues.

Just to clarify, it was before we had technical thread-proliferation issues. But there have always been philosophical proliferation issues for a lot of people -- including me, even though I'm in favor of this one.

Our wings are not tired.

Why not Jane Espenson or David Greenwalt or David Fury or Ultimate Drew or even Joss Whedon? Or for that matter, why not Eliza Dushku or Seth Green?

I do set Tim and Joss apart from every other writer or actor ever involved with ME. Just my view.

I was charmed (albeit somewhat perplexed) by the fannish sensibility of many of the music choices -- it's like the director was trying to vid Canada. --loligo on the Olympic Opening Ceremonies

I think I'd rather see an ME-alum thread, just because I think a thread with a wider topic is more likely to sustain a lively conversation. That said, I don't have enough of an objection to a thread devoted just to Tim's work to vote against it.

I do like Victor's idea for a thread title, though.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

Me too. Joss because he created the Buffyverse, and Tim because he's not just a VIP who posts here sometimes, he's a Buffista. He's one of us.

Now tagless for your comfort.

Dropping in my two cents for a works-o'da-Minear kind--for reasons already stated far better than I ever could.

If I only had a brain...

I like Tim a lot; he's been cool and funny and kind here.

Having a Minear thread for Tim-the-person is just a bit more fannish than I'm comfortable with. I'm happy with a "works of Tim" thread, though. It's the difference between "Mr. Smith, you are a GOD!" and "Mr. Smith, Dogma was a remarkably funny look at theology."

Yes, this.

Wait, is this real-world child support, where the money goes to buy food for the kids, or MRA fantasyland child support where the women just buy Ferraris and cocaine? -Jessica

That's not what's proposed. I thought I made it clear that it was dedicated to the Works of Minear, and folks keep bringing it up as if it's dedicated to whether he smooches Summer Glau or Nathan Fillion.

Does it not seem clear? Should I reword it? It seems that quite a few folks have voiced this concern, so I'm worried that I was too vague.

Why did Darth Vader cross the road? To get to the Dark Side!

I am anti-thread proliferation, but I think that a Tim’s Works thread is a great idea, for the reasons already mentioned: he’s one of us, his work always generates a great deal of discussion, and he has a new show coming out. But I would like to see this proposal paired with a proposal to clean up the loose threads, so to speak, left over from this season. Basically that means consolidating and cutting out some of them, esp Firefly- and Buffy-related threads.

It's certainly true that the Firefly threads are going to need to be retired -- eventually, after the Brits have their say, and I guess after the DVDs

And call me nuts, but I’d say that the new Tim thread would be the perfect place to discuss/speculate about future Firefly projects.

If we had a Works of Tim thread, would we be disallowed from discussing episodes Tim has written in the Angel thread?

Given that this has never happened before, why would it happen now?

I also don’t see the worry that this will turn into a Tim’s Stalkers thread or a Let's Discuss Tim's Love Life thread. Again, it’s never happened in the past, and we also have a large contingent of writers amongst us who feel strongly about separating the person from the work.

Having a Minear thread for Tim-the-person is just a bit more fannish than I'm comfortable with.

This hasn’t been proposed, has it? In the interest of avoiding confusion, it would be helpful to focus on what has been proposed, not what hasn't.

Disaffected college student

I'm troubled by how unclear many of the opinions are on this subject. I'm not saying that people can help being unclear, just that there's a big, unavoidable gray area between "Tim posts here and he's a cool guy" and "Tim is a great writer and director, perhaps the best ever to work for ME". I'm entirely comfortable with a thread created based on the latter opinion, and I'm entirely uncomfortable with a thread created based on the former.

Tim's Buffista-ness more than justifies Nillying him and making Tim-related FAQ entries. But there's a strong voice in me that wants thread creation to be sharply and solely focused on making room for lively and sustainable discussion. And even when I'm reading pro-arguments from those who seem to share that opinion, there's a lot of "plus, Tim posts here" undercurrent.

If Tim had never posted here once, wouldn't he still be a great writer and director? Would everyone who currently supports a Minearverse thread still support it if that were the case? If not, how much is this decision being affected by "Tim's our friend"? If so, why aren't we delving more into the merits of threads discussing the work of, say, Jane Espenson? What if we had five or six ME writers posting here instead of one (not counting Joss)? Would that make decisions about ME alum threads easier regarding those writers, and more importantly, should it?

I'm probably getting too meta with all this, and I may have stepped on a few toes in the process. Honestly, I'm posting this simply because I have no idea which way I would vote on the matter, and I'm hoping that clarifying some of these issues will help me to make a decision.
