Marco: Do we look reasonable to you? Mal: Well. Looks can be deceiving. Jayne: Not as deceiving as a low down dirty... deceiver.

So come, my friends, be not afraid/We are so lightly here/It is in love that we are made; In love we disappear

Reports have come in that a postcard I mailed IN SEPTEMBER from Italy arrived at its destination in West Seattle today.

(This gives me some hope that Matilda's birthday card will eventually make it to San Francisco. Holy Dinah.)

Talk about a surprise birthday treat!

Good Trouble and Righteous Fights

Yes, Epic! Such good news!

my “work hard in high school and get the fuck out of Indiana and away from the fam” plan

Yeah, going straight to college 900 miles or so from home was the best thing that could've happened to me. I didn't particularly need to escape my family, which as families go was pretty damn functional, but I sure needed to get out of the small-town milieu, and I don't think Auburn or anywhere else in-state would've been quite far enough. Hell, if nothing else, I'd probably still be a Republican if I hadn't left!

I'm feeling better about Alex's situation. He's going to submit an appeal asking to be reinstated, and I think he has a better sense of what he needs and wants to do. And while we don't want to be helicopter parents, we've offered our assistance with this particular maze of bureaucracy because it's definitely adulting on one of the harder settings.

And it's good to hear folks' stories of unconventional post-HS paths. I get the sense there will be a lot of kids in the pandemic generation who need a little extra time to sort themselves out, too.

I see this dynamic also.

I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I miss them all tonight…

Oh, Epic. I'm so happy for you!

My father offered to pay for me to take a gap year and travel to Europe (much cheaper in the 90s!), but I declined for 2 reasons - not wanting to give him any leverage over my life, and I knew if I didn't go to college right out of H.S., I never would. I definitely needed to get out of Alaska. The college I went to wasn't the best choice for me, but they offered a half scholarship & an awesome theatre program, so off I went.

If I want to become a cloud of bats, does each bat need a separate vaccination?

Epic, amazing news!!

Punishingly Intricate

I was so ready to leave home and where I grew up (although both my family and town were pretty great) and not going straight to college wasn’t really on the table. I did fine but my younger brother really could have used a year or two off. He tried to go into the marines, actually, but broke his foot in basic training and got discharged so he went to college instead. He struggled for a couple of years before he met his now wife and they moved to NC where they finished school. He went on to law school and did great.

Spider-man: Across…
Maestro
American Symphony
Nyad
And a bunch of shorts.

Same. I have one task that I (in retrospect, stupidly) thought I'd be able to focus on today and get done before I go on break, but brain says NOPE. So instead I made cranberry-pecan muffins and bagel dough (set for an overnight rise in the fridge) and spent an hour going through old emails to clear out inbox space.
