Our wings are not tired

Large monitors for working from home can make sure a difference. I've got dual 27" 4K monitors right now and they just help me keep so much at hand. I lust after the huge curved 49" super high resolution monitors.

I remember the crazy days. 500 posts an hour. Nubmer! Natgbsb

I've been working off my 13" macbook, so these 25" monitors are AMAZING. And with the new work laptop I can use it as a second monitor even though they are not the same size. It will be the first time I've had 2 monitors since starting this job and since I am in spreadsheets most of the day entering data from forms, two screens IS SO HELPFUL!

"You should never say bad things about the dead, only good… Joan Crawford is dead. Good.” —Bette Davis

Alas, the two monitors in my home office (not counting the personal laptop) are connected to two separate computers, so I'm tied to the old desktop tower and its tangle of a bazillion cables for the foreseeable future. If I could run Adobe CC 2018 on the new model I would have put the dinosaur out to pasture.

Technically I have four monitors here, there are two more above my primary pair on my laptop, one of them is tied to a Windows machine that I use for some banking stuff, and the other one is currently connected to a Raspberry Pi, and I also use it for other prototyping as needed. I keep the laptop closed and tucked off to the side as I've got plenty of real estate between the dual big monitors.

Fandom means never having to say "But where would I wear that?"

Timelies all!

Mr. S's school is now going to 3 days in person and 2 days virtual. (They are testing the kids for COVID19 every other week)

move out and draw fire

Our school postponed it again until March. I wish they wouldn't try to find a one-size-fits-all solution for the whole school district, which is one of the biggest school districts in the US (almost 200,000 students). As I understand it, there are 2 issues: while some teachers and staff are willing to come in, they are being pressured to not make the others look bad (I don't know why we can't accept both approaches) and the district won't consider "magnet" schools - you have to be able to attend the school near you. Even though we have good bussing and a magnet high school.

Meanwhile, all the smaller districts around us have already vaccinated all faculty and staff (first dose) and will open a week after the second dose.

I feel like there are so many options, and our district could try all of them and see what works, but they have committed to all or nothing.

And in related news, my son's grades went up a full level and the time to do homework dropped by 2 hours/day when we set him up on my dual large monitors rather than the 11" laptop from the school. As another point of interest about how this is exacerbating class divides.

That's encouraging!

Matilda hasn't been in a classroom since March and I despair that SFUSD is going to punt until September. I fucking hate them.

Hey Bakers! I want to bake a cake for somebody who is on a gluten restricted diet at the moment. What's my best option for doing a Victorian spongecake?

I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I miss them all tonight…

I despair that SFUSD is going to punt until September.

Unfortunately, I think you're right. It's beyond frustrating.

re: gluten free spongecake - I would do a mix: 1 to 1.5 parts high-quality 1:1 gluten free flour like Bob's or King Arthur to 1 part almond flour. You might need more tapioca starch or xanthan gum to get the lift you'd be looking for, but the texture would be close.

Damn, that's impressive!

Ugh, puppy is home and just constantly crying/whining since he got home. They said it's normal and he may do it all night (!!!!) and it's driving me nuts, I feel so so bad, poor baby does NOT understand.

If I want to become a cloud of bats, does each bat need a separate vaccination?

Ooh, if I gave my 2nd monitor to my son I could upgrade to a REALLY BIG 2nd monitor for myself. (I got mine in March when Bezos was still being cheap about WFH expenses. The expense limits are much nicer now...)
