Never heard or read or used the word Desultory that I recall, had no idea of pronunciation or meaning.
I learned it from Simon and Garfunkle's A Simple Desultory Philippic (or How I Was Robert McNamara'd into Submission).

PMM, that's what "desultory" always makes me think of too!
I never knew the title of that song. In fact, I might not have known it was Simon and Garfunkel, which does seem like a thing I should know.
It is still bugging me that I can't remember what song archipelago is in. I can almost hear the line, but not enough to identify anything and no more than that.
Damn, I haven't heard that song since...probably since I moved out, because it was on a record album my parents had.
Turns out I'm also pronouncing desultory wrong - but I'm certain I've heard it pronounced that way before! So I think it's just going to be like "satiety" in that I'm going to choose to believe that my pronunciation is correct because the real pronunciation is dumb.
Add me to the list of people pronouncing desultory wrong. If enough of us are pronouncing it wrong, then I think we get to declare our version a regional dialect.
Um, if satiety is suh-TIE-ety, why do we pronounce satiated and say-she-ated??
I was so sure that I knew how to pronounce satiety that I didn't look it up, and I now see that pride goeth before the fall.
Desultorily. De-sul-TOR-i-ly.
I'm startled by British characters saying Ruhmember and Pruhvarication. Also LaBORatory and AluMINium.

Not the only one with tattered pride on this one. I'm right there with you.
