Natter 77: I miss my friends. I miss my enemies. I miss the people I talked to every day.
Off-topic discussion. Wanna talk about corsets, duct tape, butt kicking, or physics? This is the place. Detailed discussion of any current-season TV must be whitefonted.
Today we celebrate amyparker! Happy birthday! I hope you are being spoiled and celebrated appropriately. May this be a spectacular year.
Suzi, it's good to see you here--you've been missed. What's been going on with you?
Yes! What's up? Yes, please tell us about the grandbaby.
I have hot water again! DH crawled around to see about changing the element and saw the reset was popped. Easy peasy!
Heating~ma to all y'all! And your poor grandmother, aurelia, I hope the salvage is successful.
the Google doc of Buffista addresses and contact info has a space for emergency contact.
Oh! That should be easy enough.
Most of the friends who I talk to on a regular basis, vw, Thessaly, and Victor are also Buffistas. So, there would be no problem on my end.
I have so much to do before the cleaners come tomorrow. Any spare energy~ma lying around?
David beat me to it. Yep, Cagney and I were outside for a little less than an hour in 'feels like -5' on Xmas eve as the result of a burst sprinkler system pipe in my building. By the grace of all things kind, we were not adversely affected once we got back in.
What in the holy, mechanical/internet/waterworks hell is going on right now?!
Blessings for ease and things working out way better than expected on you all.
I have to go back and read the password conversation after discovering that I was one of the many impacted by the LastPass...pay us so this will never happen to YOU...breach.
I need some guidance on what to do better.
And, David, I've been thinking about this notification situation a lot.
Moving has done many good things for me, but 2022 was also a time of letting go of most of my local friendships. That's all to the good, but the aloneness carries some inconveniences.
So. Major goal for 2023: Get the non-corporeal crap in order!
...making a list of key info like passwords and stuff in case of emergency.
Several decades ago, I composed a simple ASCII text file, titled "Somebody Stole My Wallet." I listed all the stuff I normally carried in my wallet, and the details I would need should it ever be stolen.
Over the years since then, I have added to the file. Things like passport details, credit card details, URLs and usernames and passwords for online accounts. Any time I add a new account or change a password, I update the file.
The file lives on a micro-SD memory card plugged into my computer. Once a month it gets copied to a backup thumb drive that has both USB-A and USB-C connectors.
I have a younger relative I trust, who knows where I keep the file. He also has instructions to send a notification email to Jesse if/when something happens to me.
You are an inspiration, dcp.
That is something I can create this week.
Nice one.
That's a great system, dcp
Yeah, that is great.
I'm making a list on paper for my mother, but I realize what I will really need is instructions on how to use LastPass!
This afternoon I shredded and otherwise dealt with probably a year's worth of mail, so I am feeling very accomplished. Filing what needs to be filed is a task for another day.
My SiL made the best gift ever for Tim and his brothers -- she saved my FiL's button-down shirts after we cleaned out his room at the retirement home after he died in February, and she incorporated them into quilts. There were a few tears, including from me.
My cousin had Charlie’s old flannel shirts made into a quilt that’s on my bed at the cabin. A treasure.
Man I am reading everyone’s heating and plumbing and traveling issues and damn that’s rough and I hope everyone’s warm and home soon.
I’m having a rather low-key and chill Bay Area visit that’s included some aspects that would usually get me way down (or whiny at the least) but I guess I have better perspective these days. I can only laugh that I splurged for a couple of nights at the Ritz upon arrival and got food poisoning or something on the plane? So uh not much luxurious slounging happened there. And whatever it was kept me nauseated and weak for a week, including time in Sonoma that was intended for wine-tasting and such. Well that didn’t happen! Ha!
Looking at any screen made me nauseated so it kept me off the socials for more than a week which was oddly liberating. I’ve enjoyed visits with different friends and family entirely in stealth mode. And last night my friend Jasmine had me over to her new place where she fed me a dinner of homemade bread and soup and chocolate cake and a marathon catchup session. Been a lot of those with dear people this last week.
Alas there is not enough time to see everyone individual (which, is hard for me to deal with sometimes but it’s the cost of moving across the country).
Tonight I’m hoping to see many of you at Arthur Mac’s in Oakland/Berkeley where I’m hosting a pizza and drinks open house for a few hours. I had to use the Facebook events thing but also invited Suela via text. If you’re seeing this and you’re not on FB or I forgot to text you in my nauseated haze last week, know you’re invited and I’d LOVE to see you.
Tomorrow if JZ is up to it, I get to see her and the new house and of course Hec and anyone else who’s around. Then I drove up to the cabin where I’m spending a few days with my Sacramento fam.

We are looking forward to it!
