We are Buffistas. This isn't our first apocalypse. -- Pix

Happy birthday, Trudy.

I came across a link to this excellent Sars story about 9/11; I'd read it before, but it's always worth reading again. [link]

I really need to get off my butt and do some laundry and vacuum and pack for the week: I'm going to San Diego for what is officially training but is really the one opportunity I will get to spend time with the rest of the agency's environmental staff. There will be drinks around the pool and lots of gossip about the fact that it took 9 months for HQ to not pick the most obvious choice for the chief of the program office.

D has been with the agency for many years, knows everyone, has been deputy chief for a decade; has been acting chief since last December; and yet after all that, they're bringing in a much younger person from outside the government to run the shop. People are going to be pissed. For one thing, this new person will not know squat about how we operate and how the field units work. It's gonna be a shit-show, even if she's good. Gonna be a big lift.

Our wings are not tired.

Shit-show indeed, and a story I hear too many times in other organizations as well. May the drinks and camaraderie be just what you all need.

Fandom means never having to say "But where would I wear that?"

Timelies all!

Happy Birthday Trudy!

I must obey the inscrutable exhortations of my soul—Calvin and Hobbs

Happy birthday, Trudy!

I hope your DH can find a safe way to do most of what he wants/needs to do, Laura.

Bob's learned to live with tragedy, but he knows that this tragedy is one that won't ever leave him or get better.

Happy birthday, Trudy.

Our wings are not tired.

Well, DH will be here a while since he is positive now too. Our doctor called him in meds and yelled (not really) at me for not calling him when I found out. I have records at the local health center and he doesn't so it made sense for him to call the Florida doctor. Anyway, his assistant coach is taking care of the pre-season tournaments. Regular season doesn't start until November. So he is stuck up here! He is coughing, but no fever. I am feeling much better, just stuffed up.

Sorry to hear that, Laura, but I'm glad you're feeling better and hope his passes easily, too.

Grey, rainy Monday here, and I'm on a slow start, it seems.

I am a woman of various inclinations and only some of the time are they to burn everything down in frustration

Aw, recovery~ma for the both of you, Laura.

Today is my dad’s birthday, and we celebrated yesterday by taking ferry into the city and checking out the new Tunnel Tops part of the Presidio. It’s pretty great, highly recommended- all the interpretive stuff is well thought out and they clearly listened to input from a variety of stakeholders, the views are wonderful, the Outpost playground area looks like a lot of fun and is just neat to look at, etc. unfortunately, while I was out doing that (and going to dinner) someone tried to steal my catalytic converter and for all I know actually did but certainly damaged my exhaust system so there was a long period of trying to arrange for roadside assistance through my insurance, who wanted me to file a claim first (at least that was what the automated system directed me to) and then wanted to send me to a body shop when I need a muffler shop but I eventually did get a tow truck and the driver was extremely nice and seemed very competent and gave me confidence that that’s all at least one step closer to being resolved. Came to my parents’ place with them and am now waiting to hear from the Toyota dealer we had the car towed to on the theory that if I do need the cc replaced they are a good option for that. We shall see. Don’t have my laptop, of course, so cannot work but my usual Monday meeting was canceled for other reasons so that’s not a big problem.

Whew. Didn’t sleep well after all that and kind of want to go back to bed but don’t want to miss the dealership calling.

I am weirdly irritated that this happened in a garage where I was paying for parking.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

someone tried to steal my catalytic converter

Boo! That's fucky! I'm outraged on your behalf!

Laura, hope you and DH glide through it easily and quickly.

Grey day here. Matilda is resisting Monday and all its charms.
