Natter 77: I miss my friends. I miss my enemies. I miss the people I talked to every day.
Off-topic discussion. Wanna talk about corsets, duct tape, butt kicking, or physics? This is the place. Detailed discussion of any current-season TV must be whitefonted.
hat secretly there is rot everywhere and the bathtub will fall through the ceiling or the wiring will be eaten by mice and electrocute me or something.
We are dealing with those things right now!
BUT, here's the dealio, you can fix those things. Admittedly, it takes money.
I think previous to this home buy I had a notion that things were either SOUND or ROTTEN.
But it turns out you can do and (really with older places) must do some building maintenance. Mostly to keep the water out, but also to keep the bugs out, and the electricity where it belongs.
While we were fretting over our Building Disclosure document (85 pages) JZ and I happened to watch a reaction video to It's A Wonderful Life. And it was heartening (almost heroic) to watch Mary take the old building she loved and turn it into a wonderful home.
(Side note: As I've often thought that the Harry Potter stories would be much more interesting through the viewpoint of Hermione as the chief protagonist, there is an interesting story to be told of Mary as the hero of It's a Wonderful Life.)
Anyway, our takeaway was that buying a home was an acceptance of stewardship. When we were having mild freakouts over the disclosure our realtor kept saying, "This building is fine. They don't make them like they used to." And we learned to understand that it was structurally sound and you have to make some effort to fend off water wherever it seeks to enter.
Hah but it’s the maintenance I’m worried I’m ducking up and creating a future bathtub-through-ceiling event!
We got the horrifying way too long and involved home inspection for ourselves a while back, just to use as a punch list. Inspectors list things that would never be on your own list. It was pricey, but worth it to not have surprises.
I took monday and tuesday off this week, no plans, just some recovery days and luckily times with the time change. I've slept in an extra 45min - an hour each morning.
Yesterday I did nothing, but clear off the Tivo and knit. Today I am going to do a little more.
shower
library pick-up holds
bakery stop
post office mail things
grocery store
A good start and not too much.
msbelle, that sounds lovely. Enjoy yourself!
I was going to try to go to the grocery store, but I'm a little overwhelmed with all the other stuff that needs to get done. So, I ordered deliver. I still have to go to the pharmacy later. ltc hasn't fallen asleep before 10 any night this week (probably thanks to daylight savings time) and is completely exhausted. I do not expect her to be in a good mood when I pick her up from school this afternoon. She has a half day tomorrow and is spending the afternoon with her grandparents, while I go visit Papa again.
I hope Tim likes his therapist.
My bridge is fixed. My "Vampire teeth" (how dentist described them) have been filed down to hopefully eliminate my bridge breaking again.
Mom had to get Social Security figured out for Jay's son, so he can get death benefits. And right now my mom is trying to explain to Aunt Wanda how the money works and what it can be used for and my Aunt isn't getting it and I guess fussing about the things she will have to do.
I just heard mom say "well I'd be glad to have the money coming to my account ." And she's just had to explain what money she was talking about.
My aunt doesn't need to be a guardian she needs one. But right now there is no one else. J's mom is doing all the classes she needs to for her probation and she is going petition to regain custody . Not ideal but at this point its better than the current situation.
Ongoing maintenance is why I've never had a strong desire to own a home. Just seeing that Mom had both the upstairs and downstairs a/c units fail at the same time and had to deal with a Florida summer with no a/c or partial a/c. And then Dad and Mom both had roof issues and then there plumbing issues. Then there is yard work and cleaning out gutters.
All done except for the bakery which was closed. That all took just an hour and a half.
IT IS SO LOVELY HERE TODAY! really lucked out taking these as my day's off. I have the sliding back door open to the deck and a VERY rare occurrence, the front curtain thrown open.
Groceries are running late. So I put everything in the crock pot minus the one ingredient that I do not have, and I'll add that in when the groceries arrive and then hopefully have enough time to run to the pharmacy before school pick up.
Oh, Teppy, thank any Deity Listening. May it go easily and well.
AHAHAHAHAHA
They're in there on a side chat bitching to one another about performance reviews. Ken is bitterly disappointed that HR will not accept "This person is awesome; they should keep being awesome and we should pay them more so they won't fuck off and leave me doing their job, too". I am entertained out of all proportion to what is actually under discussion.
So now that we've settled on a MCM vibe for the garden apartment it really helped shape our decisions on furniture to get and seek out.
I've been wondering how to use the social space on the 2nd floor (where we'll be moving in). The current tenant has a big wooden dining room table in the dining room, and the doors completely open to the living room creating a large, open space with lots of light.
However, the first floor tenants (who have a 5 y.o. son) have those doors closed so that the dining room and living room are discrete spaces.
While the second floor is beautiful the way its done, we really don't need a large dining room with a big table. Aside from Thanksgiving and Xmas we don't have big sit down dinners.
So I'm thinking we'll close those doors and do something different with the dining room.
And Jacqueline and I have hit on the idea of creating the Lily and Vivian Charles Drinking Parlor in the dining room. Yeah. So we're going to need a bar and probably some loveseat action.
