Friends don't let friends read "Atlas Shrugged"

Best wishes for a successful house hunt. One of my coworkers is buying a new house - his only child is heading off to college, so they're downsizing from a BIG place in the 'burbs to something smaller and closer in.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

Here's the listing: [link]

For comparison's sake, that price will barely get you a flat within a Victorian in our neighborhood. So to have a whole house with two complete flats, and a mother-in-law type unit with a big back yard near our neighborhood for that price is a huge bargain.

However, that means it'll also attract the attention of real estate investors who aren't looking to move in but flip it.

So a probate sale would involve a down payment to make a bid, and then an overbid process that the court would oversee.

With a place like this we could secure housing for Emmett and Matilda in the city as well, not to mention a separate M-i-L with its own bathroom and kitchen to put friends up for an extended stay.

And we'd go to town landscaping the hell out of that back yard. Does it need a gazebo? Maybe a Tiny House/Studio?

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

I’m watching Encanto en español and it’s very annoying because I like to have captions on—I catch more of what they’re saying then—but they don’t match the audio! It’s like two different people translated from the English—they’re both the same idea but different words and phrases (the captions in the song say “no hablamos de Bruno” whereas the audio says “no se habla de Bruno”)

It's because it is two different processes! And they have different constraints -- for dubbing, they try to match the mouth movements (even in animation, I guess?), and in subtitles, they have space limitations. I think I learned this reading about Squid Game.

Oh shit. We just had a unicorn type house drop in our market and we could afford it.

Ooooh, nice! Good luck!

Two people I know are currently in the hospital on ventilators with Covid, both vaxxed and boosted. One is a relative who has been battling cancer for a couple of years. He's probably not going to make it.

Oh no, I am sorry to hear that.

I am a woman of various inclinations and only some of the time are they to burn everything down in frustration

Oh, that is lovely. I hope it works out!

Apparently if you're enough of a power nerd, there is nothing that cannot be flowcharted.

Those kitchens and fireplaces and decks are gorgeous! Nice deep backyard, too.

David, that's a lovely house. The long yard is nice . And I bet Matilda would claim one of the turret bedrooms ... I know I would have at her age.

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

After living here for a bunch of years, I finally got my flue cleaned out so I can have a fire in my fireplace, and I love it so much! It's great.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

I'm now adopting the mind set that we won't get because it's too perfect and also it will attract a lot of real estate speculators.

That said, we do have the means for a good overbid and a big down payment, so it's not like daydreaming about a summer home in Scotland. We'd have to make a bid on Feb. 2nd so I think we'll be doing that and see where it goes.

I think with a yard that big we'd definitely do a backyard office/studio/shed: [link]
