On the other hand, when we vacation, she wants to play everything by ear and just wander, and I want a plan and I want to make sure I see the museum or zoo or whatever in the suggested order and use a map to go to things without a lot of wandering because we might miss something.
There's a way to both of these things, which is actually what I prefer when I'm traveling.
And that is have a couple tentpoles up for the day (One museum, one neighborhood, one key restaurant for lunch) and then leave it unstructured the rest of the time.
Pick neighborhoods with a lot to explore and there you are.
Went to church with the parents and then out to lunch with about 20 of their friends. Other parts of the day involved trying to explain what a meme is to my mother, finding VHS-to-DVD conversion options for my father, and watching football. Late in the evening my mother started feeling pukey. I hope whatever it is, it is mild and resolves quickly.
I think I could do the neighborhood unstructured, but I feel like museums are laid out in a particular way for a reason, which is why they give you a map! For maximum enjoyment.
Looks like mom's operation went fine. She's in recovery now, I'm waiting to hear when she'll be released. Thanks for the ~ma, I appreciate it.
Good news Shir!
I am finding myself really unmotivated to go to work today. Not actually work, but the travel part. I am considering working from home. But I feel like there are maybe things I have to do there before break. And I know I am so lucky to get break, but it is really my eleventy billion vacation days and the fact we are a school that allows me to take break. I am still losing about 2-3 weeks of vacation days untaken. I get five and carry five and it seems impossible to take 10 weeks.

That is a lot of vacation time. You should absolutely be using more of it! Put that planning mojo to work for yourself and put some time off in your calendar for 2020, at least 1 day/month
That's good, Shir.
I'm heading up to see family tomorrow. I love that I have a place in their lives, but I could live without ever seeing an airport in December ever again.
In talking to a coworker the other day, I made a New Year's Resolution to take more vacation, because I'm about to max out on carryover. So I have to take at least one week off a quarter, which should be doable!!
I had a terrible job at the same uni which did not "let" me take vacation. So I came to this job, 15 years ago with 5 weeks. I actually get, and carry over 5 weeks, 4 days! I can't possibly take 10 weeks of vacation! Three seems doable. My boss suggests that if I get another promotion, I quite, get the payout, and reapply! But that seems scary
I am working from home because, um, I need the bathroom,
