I had a terrible job at the same uni which did not "let" me take vacation. So I came to this job, 15 years ago with 5 weeks. I actually get, and carry over 5 weeks, 4 days! I can't possibly take 10 weeks of vacation! Three seems doable. My boss suggests that if I get another promotion, I quite, get the payout, and reapply! But that seems scary

TCG went from 5 weeks to 2 weeks when he switched jobs, but some of that was mitigated by a far shorter commute and flexible hours.

I think it is designed so that we could take off the summer, when there is no work. Except, things have changed, so there is always work! And we have students all year long. But who wants to complain about too many benefits!

My company lets us sell back excess vacation time every year. I don't ever want to do that, but it is a nice perk for people who get in that situation. 10 weeks is a lot but you only have to do that once. Take the summer off!
We couldn't sell back and we could not take more than a week at a time. Until 2 years ago, we could not rollover. I had employees just lose 1-2 weeks of vacation every year.
Oh, hey, I just checked and I have 420 hours of accrued vacation time. And because we have 35-hour workweeks, that's twelve weeks.
