Back when I was a kid (El Paso, Texas, in the 60s and 70s), we said the pledge every morning but no one was required to participate. Most kids did but certain religious groups (I'm thinking Jehovah's Witnesses, but I may be wrong) refused to pledge allegiance to anyone or anything other than God.
So A) not a new thing and B) not a secular thing.
Not that facts are going to change some people's minds.

Yeah, our Jehovah's Witness, among other people, did not say the Pledge, which I think we had in school until 6th grade? I forget.
Yes, the girls I was thinking of in High School were Jehovah's Witnesses. It was probably the first time I knew someone not Catholic! My public HS was so Catholic they had the church announcements along with the other stuff.
