Back when I was a kid (El Paso, Texas, in the 60s and 70s), we said the pledge every morning but no one was required to participate. Most kids did but certain religious groups (I'm thinking Jehovah's Witnesses, but I may be wrong) refused to pledge allegiance to anyone or anything other than God.
So A) not a new thing and B) not a secular thing.
Not that facts are going to change some people's minds.
(I'm thinking Jehovah's Witnesses, but I may be wrong)
Yeah, our Jehovah's Witness, among other people, did not say the Pledge, which I think we had in school until 6th grade? I forget.
Yes, the girls I was thinking of in High School were Jehovah's Witnesses. It was probably the first time I knew someone not Catholic! My public HS was so Catholic they had the church announcements along with the other stuff.
Internet still has me giddy today. I know it is still as dire as ever, but that little wave of joy and hopefulness is really helping.

An actual Nazi getting punched in the face is the cherry on top of the womens' marches.
I'm fully behind actual Nazi's being punched in the face.
Thank you for the birthday wishes. You all are so good at making a person feel loved.
Happiest of birthdays, Windy!
Okay, I just did two modules in my Stanford class. I've also done laundry, emptied the dishwasher, taken out the garbage, washed the bedding, and even I ate a salad for dinner. Oh, and I volunteered to do a thing for the political action group I joined. I had a bad mental health week, so I'm giving myself gold stars.
