Dad finished his half-marathon in about 4 hours, not the last person to finish, and the only 75+ year-old out there. We got his medals engraved.
Your dad is a BADASS. That's awesome!
I cannot easily imagine running a marathon. I would like to someday, but it's not going to happen soon.
The Flying Pig marathon is next weekend, and it's expanded to include a half-marathon, 10K, 5K, a 2-mile run for people with dogs called the Flying Fur Run, some other 1-mile events for kids and people with disabilities, and a 1-mile beer run (sponsored by a local brewery, and there's beer and coneys at the end) on Friday night.
Skyline chili (home of the 3-way, 4-way, and 5-way chili) sponsors the Flying Pig 3-way, which is the 5K, 10K, and half-marathon, and the Flying Pig 4-way, which is the 5K, 10K, and full marathon. You get the finishers medals for all the events, plus an additional one for the 3-way or 4-way. (If you ALSO do the 1-mile beer run on Friday night, then your 3-way or 4-way is "with extra cheese". Look, we take our Skyline VERY seriously here, even when it's lending its name to a race.)
Last year my brother-in-law (who is 50-something but has been running since he was in grade school) did the 3-way (with extra cheese) but decided this year to do the 4-way (with extra cheese). He's crazy but SUPER excited about it. (Two years ago, after his 4th marathon, he said he was done with marathons. His wife just rolled her eyes, because she knew that was a lie. She was right.)
This is the first year I can do the beer run Friday night, because the last 2 years I was in Chicago for work right before the Flying Pig weekend and got back too late on Friday to do the beer run. But I don't have to go to Chicago this week, so Tim and I are doing the 1-mile beer run (well, beer WALK for us) Friday night, and then I'm doing the 5K Saturday morning. Tim is opting out because of his RA. I'm pretty excited about the races this year. I've been walking a LOT to get ready for them, and I actually feel prepared this year. And the beer run is going to be a lot of fun, even though I can't drink the beer or eat the coneys at the end.
