My DVD special features says the watermelon was part of research in food for famine areas, but watermelons are not conducive to efficient air drops. So the Banzai Institute was doing research into making watermelon rinds tougher so that they would survive the drop. Hence the melon in the press for testing. But then they discovered that melons that don't burst on landing present another issue when being air dropped. The line of research was cancelled.

I won't address the watermelon, but H and I saw Flash (AH-AH!) Gordon in the theater. There was a couple behind us MSTK-ing all hell out of it, we nearly wet ourselves laughing at the dust-dry commentary. And forever after, we've had fond memories of that movie.
A few years later, someone loaned us the movie, and we made popcorn, jailed the kids for the night and snuggled up together on the couch to watch. About a third of the way in, we were sneaking looks at each other, and then one of us said, "Wasn't this a lot funnier when we saw it before? Have they cut out some lines, or something?"
About halfway through, we realized it's a really bad movie, and what had made our first watch of it so funny was the couple behind us.
But the "AH-AH!" is indelible. Remember when Tom Hanks' movie Splash (AH-AH!) came out? And reruns of M*A*S*H (AH-AH!). And there's no mentioning the CW series now, either.

I facetiously credit seeing Flash Gordon as a pre-teen, with its Queen theme song, Princess Aura's outfits, and Flash's lack of same, for my turning out gay.

Cake - I thought Aniston was great, but the movie just kinda sat there.

That was also the explanation given for the watermelon in the novelization of Buckaroo Banzai. Which is actually pretty good.
