I saw Jurassic World 2 last night in IMAX (non-3D! hooray!!), and it is a really good bad movie.
The plot is nonsense. The majority of the actors are walking props. All of the set pieces are homages to other, better movies. ALL of the elements from the first Jurassic Park are in here. (Seriously, someone should make a bingo card. Or a drinking game.)
BUT Chris Pratt is one of the most watchable movie people there is, the new dinosaurs are cool, and the location where 90% of the movie takes place looks like Hogwarts. Don't you want to see Starlord defending Hogwarts from a dinosaur attack? With lasers? The Victorian haunted house vibe works really well, the directing is great, and it's just fun to watch like any good b-movie.
And yes, there is a post-credits scene. (Sam Jackson's character from the first movie is alive after all, and he wants to talk to the velociraptors about the Avengers initiative.)
(Okay, not really. Sorry. But if Ryan North is lurking and wants to write that movie anyway, I will buy an advance ticket TODAY.)
I loved catching all the callbacks to other movies in the first Jurassic World. And I've been looking forward to Chris Pratt's character going "Hey, you remember that bit where I'm a hardass Navy veteran? And I've got a semi-trained apex predator as an ally? No? Let me remind you."
The Spider-Verse trailer is sooo goooood.
I saw Ocean's 8 last night.
Goodness, that was fun. I'm not sure if I want to be Cate Blanchet's character or do her, but either way I enjoyed sharing two hours with her. It was fun to see romantic revenge as less of a main driver and more of the cherry on top of an otherwise profit-driven plan. I have to admit, I did not see the larger robbery coming. I also didn't see Anne Hathaway's character joining in, but it was delightful to see her rise above the dumb society chick bit. Rihanna and Mindy Kaling's characters were great! I loved the range of personalities and gifts that each person brought to the table.
I hope it does well. I'd love to see an Ocean's 9.
I'd love to see an Ocean's 9.
FWIW, I'm fairly sure they're starting at 8 so that, with two sequels, it will segue right into 11, 12 and 13.
The cast was great, but I wish the heist stuff had had more pop or something. More Soderbergh, I guess.
I really enjoyed
Solo
and would place it above both The Force Awakens and Rogue One, despite some plot messiness. It was fun! I'm a little sad that they had to have
Han helping rebels in it; I liked him being a good guy but not involved in all that.
Explaining what it means to make
the Kessel Run in under 12 parsecs
in a way that actually kinda sorta made sense was really quite impressive.
Well, looks like my work-related film drought is finally over. And I'm happy to report that
Incredibles 2
was very fun.
I also saw Ocean's 8 and pretty much agree with Calli, especially about wanting to see Ocean's 9. I also agree that the heist needed something, but I'm not quite sure what. More tension? I think it might have helped if
we saw more of the AH character discovering/figuring out what was going on.
I've read various Ocean's 8 reviewers say
that they wanted an "oh, shit" moment where things looked like they would spin out of control, but that the team would resolve/turn out to have planned for/turn to their advantage and they didn't think the movie gave them that. But my hyper-competency fetish was well served by watching Sandra Bullock's character tick items off her list as her five years of planning came to fruition.
As I think about it, the fact that I and a lot of other people keep referring to [actor's name]'s character instead of the character's name probably points to something, too.
I still had tons of fun, and the show opened number one at the box office, so presumably, we'll see Ocean's 9. Yay!
I think the
"oh shit" moment was supposed to be/could have been when she comes out of the bathroom with no necklace on, but they didn't play that up enough, I guess.
