Birth.Movies.Death pointed out that there have been like a dozen X-Men movies in the past 20 years, and except for Wolverine, there has been no character development. All the characters are exactly the same as they were in the first film, in 2000.
It's good to have cargo. Makes us a target for every other scavenger out there, though, but sometimes that's fun too.

The IO9 review laments that it's not better, as they see glimmers of the movie they would have loved to see but they vanish very quickly. They were a little more positive in their overall assessment, though.
I for one wasn't too hyped up to see it anyway, despite how excited I was that they were actually going with Jean encountering the Phoenix Force during a mission in space aspect. Though I guess they still used the repressed mental trauma angle that Last Stand did as well, which is lame.

I have to agree with the Nerdist's argument that the 90s X-MEN cartoon, of all things, still holds the title of the best adaptation of the storyline: [link] if only because they followed the complete arc and actually let us care, rather than the "evil force makes Jean go crazy and kill her friends" story the movies insist on doing.

When I saw that it was by the same guy who wrote the screenplay the LAST time this story was filmed, I knew it would be a dumpster fire.

I saw Dark Phoenix over the last weekend and...I wouldn't say it was Bad, just Okay. The thing is, for the best story-arc ever of my favorite comics team, Okay just isn't enough. I'm increasngly convinced that movies just aren't a good fit for stories where part of the appeal is the interaction between a large number of characters in multiple combinations. In a serialized format like comics or a TV show you have time to showcase all those relationships, but in a 2-3 hour one-shot some characters will inevitably become wallpaper.
That said, I thought the fact that, in at least two major turning points, the right answer turning out to be "trust Jean" redeemed a lot of issues.
