I must obey the inscrutable exhortations of my soul—Calvin and Hobbs

We sometimes get a couple of kids here, so I bought some candy. Then a friend asked if she could take me to dinner, and I figured, well, it's good that I bought candy I like since I won't be here to give it out. But now it's after 6, and I'm not sure when or where to meet said friend, so I'm not sure what's happening. No kids yet, though.

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

We had our three little kids from the street, but I wonder if that's going to be it.

this mess was yours / now your mess is mine

Every year we have kids who come early (trick-or-treat starts at 6 p.m., which everyone generally obeys...except this band of kids). Usually the early kids come at 5:45 or so. This year? All 10 of them showed up at 5:20. Sheesh! I had gotten the candy out at 5:00 because I knew we'd have early trick-or-treaters and I wanted to be ready.

It is cold as BALLS here. Well, snowman balls. Poor parents who are taking their kids out.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

My current can't-stop-it grilled cheese is low-gly bread, havarti, and bacon and/or tomato. For some reason I can't quite tolerate mayo right now.

I just came across a list of 10 grilled cheese recipes and the Gruyere stuffed French toast looks nummy and the Welsh Rarebit variation with spinach brings back memories...

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

I wonder if people are literally only going to friends' houses, because I heard some kids screaming outside and we have decor!

Twelve so far. Tiny Batman is my fave so far -- he stopped on the way back to his folks to cheerfully reply "Happy Halloween!" to mine. Polite Batkid.

I don't think we've gotten any Elsas yet, but we got a mummy whose wrappings were strategically loose so you could see his sweatshirt underneath, which had a ribcage printed on it. Clever. We also got a teeny tiny Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, who seemed unclear on the concept of trick-or-treat but had a deathgrip on his candy bucket nonetheless.

Sometimes I think I might just move up to Vermont, open a bookstore or a vegan restaurant. Adam Schlesinger, z''l

Trick or treating here was last night, and I wasn't home, so I don't get to see the costumed kids. I'm looking at all my friends photos on facebook, though. I love the ones where the costume was obviously the kid's idea -- my friend's three-year-old is "Super Girl Kitty," which seems to be a purchased Super Girl costume, red leggings, whiskers drawn on her face, and cat ears drawn on her forehead. (I have a feeling that the "Kitty" part of this costume was a last-minute addition.)

The lost sheep grow teeth, forsake their lambs, and lie with the lions.

No trick or treaters here yet.
