Natter 73: Chuck Norris only wishes he could Natter
Off-topic discussion. Wanna talk about corsets, duct tape, butt kicking, or physics? This is the place. Detailed discussion of any current-season TV must be whitefonted.
My neighbor E, who is in nursing school now, considered herself a complete and utter math failure. She discovered that the second time around (and in practical application),she gets it.
She did think the prob&stats prof had made a mistake when she got her first exam back. Because she hadn't missed a problem. It took her (prof) a while to convince E.
So you never know.
Amy- I work at a School of Nursing, and you can probably handle the math! You have to take Statistics, but ours is really geared toward healthcare and how to interpret articles and data and share with your patients.
I would recommend doing a 2 year RN degree at a community college, getting a job, and then completing a BS at a 4 year school (which the hospital will probably pay for). Because the BS is half "arts and sciences" part of the degree, a lot of your undergrad courses will probably transfer (even if they don't if you originally apply to a 4 year school).
I should also be a big girl and actually try to improve my math skills, nursing or no!
There are no roles that I want to do available where I am.
This is me, too. There are more jobs I could get if I were in NYC. Even remote freelance work has changed a lot as publishing has changed, though. And a lot of the copyediting/editing that needs doing now is more business and academic oriented, which is not me.
My strengths are Regency England, meet-cutes, and metaphors for having sex, none of which are in great demand in the wider world, sadly.
I looked at getting a medical coding certificate from a comm college to get my foot in the door with medical careers, but opted to just stay in admin field for a bit. Next job needs to have a position I can grow into.

I'M looking for someone strong in these fields, but unfortunately, I can pay a mere pittance.
I kind of hate to recommend this book, because the concept of it irritates me so much, but Danica McKellar has a series of books for tween girls that's supposed to explain math in a way that girls can understand. Unfortunately, this largely means making everything into something to do with makeup or friends or boys, but if you can roll your eyes through that, the actual explanations are pretty good. They go through the math from grades 5-8, roughly, which most studies have shown is the point where Americans' math scores tend to plummet.

My reticule is ready.
ha, Amy!
It's also weird to be looking at college programs while your kid is looking at them, you know?
No, it's a great idea! Srsly

My daughter has no interest in makeup or boys, but maybe she can squint and pretend they are references to hobbits.
Thanks for the encouragement, everybody. I'm going to look into some programs this weekend.
I'd go in a different direction too, but I'm not brave enough to pay my dues twice.
Which means I'm oh, SO, fucked.
