I kind of hate to recommend this book, because the concept of it irritates me so much, but Danica McKellar has a series of books for tween girls that's supposed to explain math in a way that girls can understand. Unfortunately, this largely means making everything into something to do with makeup or friends or boys, but if you can roll your eyes through that, the actual explanations are pretty good. They go through the math from grades 5-8, roughly, which most studies have shown is the point where Americans' math scores tend to plummet.
