'we all walk this earth feeling we are frauds. The trick is to be grateful and hope the caper doesn't end any time soon"

If you're going to make ambergris cheesecake, you really should flavor it with rosewater for that perfumey touch of class.

Friends don't let friends read "Atlas Shrugged"

And decorate with gold leaf. Edible, if you insist, but not necessarily.

Toddson, definitely!

Why did Darth Vader cross the road? To get to the Dark Side!

Ambergris seems like it would be chock full of umami.

Maybe you could swap it out for something equally umami-y but more accessible. Like sea urchin roe? Or wait, still too esoteric -- what about soy sauce?

I am a woman of various inclinations and only some of the time are they to burn everything down in frustration

I'm seeing sage suggested as a substitute in my googling. Along with more exotic ingredients that i haven't heard of.

A dress should be tight enough to show you're a woman but loose enough to flee from zombies. — Ginger

Theodosia, he'll have his bar mitzvah in May. I'm cool with him being actively Jewish; his heritage, his choice.

I just think this whole situation is totally shitty and cruel, and totally E's fault for being thoughtless. I think he should be allowed to go -- it wasn't HIS fault (he's 12! Geez!) for not remembering "Oh, it's Yom Kippur."

I think it's needlessly mean to essentially penalize him for his mother's forgetfulness. Esp. since E never seems to repent or atone for all the shitty things she's done to Dan.

I mean, I get an e-mail from Nilly every damn year for Yom Kippur asking for forgiveness for anything she might have done to hurt me, and yet this woman has NEVER made any statement making amends for all the harmful things she's done and said to D.

I know it's the Holiest Day, but I just think she's a big fat hypocrite.

I should have been more specific about what I wanted on my salad. Oh well, live and learn. ANd, hey, free food, so whatever.

Because books.

ita, I hope you're wrapped up safe today. Your dad, too.

Strix, that's a shitty thing to do to a kid. It's a parent's job to consider all angles first, then make a decision -- promising something and then snatching it away is awful.

When did formal mourning periods pass by the wayside? Small touches like black-bordered letter paper hung on for a while, but that just may have been for very formal families. I think I've seen pictures from the 40s and 50s of men with black armbands. Was there just too much for women to do, to spend a year withdrawn from society? Never mind the year or so in Second Mourning etc.

Because books.

Just a guess, but I would imagine after WWI, there wasn't time for it, and too women had too many responsibilities with so many of the young men dead. I think for the higher classes it probably hung on a little longer, but I think that's probably always true -- they would have had the means for a separate wardrobe, etc.
