Five Thirty Eight finally finished their Best American Burrito bracket!
I read a bunch of those articles a month or so back, and really tripped over the concept of the "California" burrito, which contains carne asada and french fries. Because WTF. My BIL has been here half his life, and he has never even heard of this phenomenon. Definitely a southern California thing.

I basically won't order burritos except in southern NM. I don't believe in fat burritos with rice. Rice never belongs in a burrito.

Or not, as I've lived here my whole life and never heard of it. In my head, the big division between Nor Cal burritos and So Cal is whether or not you put rice in it, not french fries.
There's a Peruvian dish called saltado that mixes fries in with steak and veggies and sauce, maybe it's a riff on that?

Fries made their way into a lot of incongruous things in C&Eastern cuisine.
I'm not a fan. I don't generally like potatoes+carbs. Never have. Pierogi is completely wasted on me.
