flea, whenever I come to NYC from north of the city, I always park at the New Haven station and take the train in. I figure it can't be any more expensive than parking in the city itself, plus it saves me the horror of trying to drive/park in New York. I imagine the calculation would be pretty similar coming in from NJ.

That's what we always did, too - growing up in central CT we knew which were the best Metro North stations to leave a car at (some had free parking, but that was a looong time ago). But we'll probably be coming on i-70 or i-80 and I don't know the NJ suburbs at all! And also we'll have luggage, which is an added complication.

I *think* there is a free lot at the Newport Centre mall (which is right next to a PATH station), right across the river from Manhattan, but I'm not 100% sure so someone from NJ should probably chime in.

Yes, but you can park in a garage for $20-30/day, and some of the bigger chains have online coupons.

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.
Luggage and kids would make me think twice about parking and taking a train after a long drive.... I'd think you could google up a coupon for a garage that would be cheaper than a hotel and worth it.

I would, of course, love to see NYCistas, though I will have a large posse what with the 4 of us, my brother and his fiance, and probably my mother and maybe my sister. We're talking about being in the city Deb 27-Jan 1, and our list of to-dos so far is your basic Manhattan tourism for children - Natural History, probably the Met (Dillo just read From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler) and I really want to go to the Cloisters; maybe skating.
