Alzheimer's is such a difficult disease, and I think people who haven't experienced it personally don't fully understand that it isn't just memory loss but often a complete personality change.

Yes, this. I never really knew my paternal grandmother, because she was sliding into Alzheimer's when I was born. One of my good friends is the caretaker for her mother, who has a slow progressing form of it, and it has been very hard for both of them over the past several years.
