Hmm...I know it's completely contradictory, but I think Smith played both an older and younger Doctor than Tennant (it makes sense in my head...). He's also more or less my age, which is a purely subjective, but very meaningful (to me) dividing line.
Anyway, I am to bed.
I thought I read somewhere that it was cannon the the Doctor got younger with each regeneration. I could be wrong.

Twelve. Which would technically mean thirteen doctors, so I guess they have one left up their sleeve.
I think that's canon that they may conveniently forget.
I think there has been recent-ish dialog implying that the 12 regenerations isn't hard and fast.

My understanding was 12 regeneration, 13 possible doctors. But then River transferred her remaining regenerations to him so that could be used for hand-wavium more options.
