Zen, genograms are basically org charts for your family. They are a wildly useful tool in understanding the stories that get passed down, generationally, both consciously and unconsciously.
This particular tome on the subject discusses how particular events and traumas influence subsequent generations and how that chain of experience can be broken.
I'm most interested in it because it is supposed to contain some useful case studies.
The genogram books that I have now use examples like Sigmund Freud's family (just exactly as you'd expect it to be) and Peter Fonda's family as examples. While entertaining, not particularly relateable to my audience.

sj, yeah, But then I also feel weird about that thing, after people have a baby where, you know, everyone's all relieved that "everything's okay". Not that I don't want that for them...this is not an easy life, and I'm not militant enough to insist that if I had every choice, I'd still pick it. But it's also not *that* horrible, and I feel a little insulted every time I've got to go "Thank God, another baby that won't live like me." And at the same time, I have to be all over it already. But it's the worst thing ever for your bundle of joy...makes total sense.
Yeah, it's difficult. I definitely don't wish ill on anyone's child or think that it is easy on any parent if their child has special needs, but am I supposed to feel guilty that my mother never had the chance to raise a "normal" child? Plus, as someone with spina bifida my chances of having a child with spina bifida is increased, so am I supposed to feel bad about taking that risk? It was just a stupid thing to say to me.
