So, the horrible thing that happened in the pet care company was made more horrible by the behavior of the roommate of the effected couple.
Apparently, two couples live together and we did them the favor of giving them a big discount for walking two dogs...when that is normally a premium.
Today...just 3 days after the tragedy...the roommate calls to...incredibly long story/rant about how people suck avoided...shake me down to essentially walk his dog for free 'Because of everything that has happened.'
We zeroed out the account of the bereaved couple and paid for the final vet bill out of common decency. There was no negligence or fault on our part. It was a horrifying accident that has shattered the walker involved.
But this guy, who didn't even know this couple before moving into their share two months ago, is trying to leverage their grief.
I. can't. even.
The conversation when around in circles for about 20 minutes because my brain simply could not comprehend what he was doing...and I'm a pretty damned cynical character!
sj, peace and love to you and yours. It's so hard.
erika, I might just point that out to him should he call again.
I might add that we are already walking his dog for less than half of what we charge normally.
Jackhole indeed.
I can't say that I've never taken advantage of a situation in my life. But This? (He has never even mentioned the poor dog.)
I just joined OK Cupid again. I'll see how this goes.
"Well, we *were* cool, but now you have forced me to add an insensitivity tax of forty percent." (for jackhole dog guy)
Hil, good luck.
I'm not sure what I was looking for from an online date, just that I didn't find it. Met some nice people, though.
Ok bonny, I have to say that for some reason I was kinda expecting some other shoe to drop with this very sad situation - I was expecting someone, somehow, to be a jackhole. And now that it has happened, I can just say how glad I am that the jackholery is adjacent to the people actually involved. It sucks for anyone to have to be touched by it, but it isn't inside any of the protagonists, so to speak.
Andi, the company owner said what you said.
I actually expected a negative grief response, which might still come, but that I could totally understand.
This. Seriously, I can't remember the last time I was so sideswiped by someone else's behavior. In that puppy-tilts-its-head, bzuh? sort of way.
I've regained my wits and will pretty much do what erika said, if he comes back to me.
I pretty much live by Bruce Springsteen's eulogy for Harry Chapin which, in paraphrase, goes, "He did what he could for the other guy and always had a clear eye on the wicked ways of the world."
This one snuck up on me. I may need to have my eyes checked.
It's mot a bad thing that you don't expect people to be that opportunistic and horrible.
You know, it often seems that, no matter how low you set the bar, someone will find a way to get under it. Kind of a moral limbo.
