I'm amazed by how smart...and persistent we are. Especially about language...our medium of connection.

Not to throw a grenade, but the conversation of think/thing (In the interest of full disclosure, I'm in the thing camp), reminded me of the first time I heard someone say "Sort of speak" versus "So to speak."

My reaction was actually physical. I had to delve pretty deep to figure out why I cared so much. The answer was complex and interesting.

Is it "I haven't the foggiest notion" or "I haven't the vaguest notion?"

My mom said foggiest, and I did too, till I went to college and switched to vaguest.

I'm of the opinion that multiple similar-sounding idioms are not a real problem. Thing/think can coexist, and so can foggiest/vaguest.

I for one am delighted to now know the term "eggcorn." It's hilarious. Like when my friend who teaches middle school history got a paper that had the phrase "aunt sisters" for "ancestors." And I'd heard both "another thing coming" and "another think coming" before, but the first I hear more often. Didn't realize that "think" came first.

I don't see any reason a notion can't be either vague or foggy, but my confusion about the thing coming--well, if I'd heard "it's an antiquated expression and they talked funny back then" I might leave it alone, but since people are saying "your way doesn't makes sense, this way does"--uh, that's not the argument that's gonna convince me of anything useful.

My boss chewed me out about a lot of things that were clearly not my fault this morning, and my manager literally gave me the opposite direction in every regard half an hour later. Luckily I got the chance to tell her about the contradiction just before she went into a meeting with him, so hopefully they will Thunderdome and leave me out of this. I'm only working a half day today, so...less than 2 hours remaining...

Our local paper is proudly touting the lines of people at Chick-fil-a yesterday. Apparently they're standing up for decency and free speech.

If that were going on here, I would sit beside the Chick-Fil-a and loudly eat from a McDonald's bag. Or someplace that has a good track record in human rights, I guess I'd have to do some research if I were really going to do that. McDonald's is okay, right?

My own eggcorn was writing "Sir Vantes" on a lit exam in middle school. I'd never seen it written out before. The teacher took off points, which made me mad; I mean, clearly I knew the answer!
