If you run your cursor over the scene you'll find that some items get a purple halo and a pop-up window appears offering to let you take the object, smonster. I think the first one is the alarm clock in Chapter 2. But I haven't played around long enough to know what do with the items later. They do seem a rather random bunch of objects so far.

My house should really be cleaner, but whatever. I might have had houseguests next weekend, but now I won't, so as usual, it's just me. And the floor only looks bad with dust and cat hair in the morning when the sun slants in....
