And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

I have quite possibly the firstest world problem ever right now.

Last year as a "thank you for getting through a hellish fiscal year" gift, everyone in my department got an iPad. These were purchased at retail and given to us free and clear.

This year, as a "thank you for getting through with ANOTHER hellish fiscal year and actually making money" gift, we are being given iPad 3s....with a catch. This time around, they were purchased through the IT department and if we want one we have to swap it for the iPad we got last year. It will also be set up by the IT department and be subject to the company internet usage policy.

Now, the new ones are WAY better than the old ones. Last year we got 16GB Wifi, this year we can get 64GB Wifi/4G. And of course the retina display, faster processor, etc etc. But I'm not sure I want to own a device that's restricted by a corporate usage policy. (Not that I'm using it for anything illegal, just...what if I want to use it to watch porn? For example. I doubt IT would actually be actively tracking our usage because they have better things to do with their time, but they definitely COULD, if they wanted to.)

So I'm torn.

Why did Darth Vader cross the road? To get to the Dark Side!

Oo Kat, if you have time later, I'll be back home right zippy after I finish teaching. But I totes understand if you are too busy to meet up, and/or if you don't want to expose your daughter to the woman with the cough.

On second thought, don't expose your daughter to the woman with the cough I think. But hello! :: waves ::

"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

Jessica,

did you have an Ipad 2?

Will they pay the 4g monthly data plan?

Yes

Will they pay the 4g monthly data plan?

No, if we want to use the 4G we have to pay for it ourselves.

The real question is would you have to give it back when you leave the company. If so, hell to the no. If not, much more a better possibility.

"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

okay, last question: when IT sets it up, what do they do to it? how do they monitor your activity? It isn't that easy to put internet tracking software on an ipad unless they force your hand with a particular browser, but you can just download another.

meara, I'm actually waiting to hear back on that question. If it's company property, then no, I don't want it.

Honestly, LeN, that's a good question - I have no idea. I should just ask the IT guy who's doing it, he'd give me a straight answer. I know they need to record the MAC addresses before they can give them to us, but I think that's it.

"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

for example, the mobile spy software for the ipad requires the ipad to be jailbroken.

I think you should ask him about whether your activity will be monitored and that you are asking for privacy concerns, not that you plant to do anything illegal on your device.

you also may want to ask if they are installing parental controls to control what you can/cannot install because that would awful.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Awesome, Jilli!

And, uh, my sister might totally be reading this right now.

Wave and say hi.
