Our bonuses do not have 401k contributions taken out by default - you have to elect that specifically every year if you want it. So those are the emails we get. The idea of suspending your regular contributions so that 401k didn't hit the bonus seems kind of misguided. How many people forget or delay reupping?

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.
Part of it is that I feel my 401K is completely useless, and I just pay into it because it's entirely dumb not to, but I'll still be working for the rest of my life anyway.

The only problem we ran into with the waterbed was Cat Mondu, who rightfully acquired his title of Bubble Hunter. He cold spot a bubble through three layers of blanket and sheet and mattress cover, and more than once we'd wake up to soggy covers and a proud cat. "I got it, Daddy!"

Back to the not matching expectations when meeting in real life convo... My mom worked for Kaiser many years ago and had worked with a gal over the phone who would eventually become her best friend. But based on the phone conversations and mom's Persian married name, the friend had decided mom was a militant black muslim. IDEK. The friend never told mom this until they actually met in person and the friend said there was no way mom could be who she said cause she was white. I think they bonded over that confusion and then became fast friends.

Yeah, I would not put any of the bonus into 401K, and instead put whatever percentage you think right into short terms savings. In today's economy lots of chances for short term emergencies, so building up short term savings is important. Yeah 401K can be tapped in emergency, but the penalty is pretty ouchie. With irregular income, better to divide between short term savings and shit you will enjoy (either having or remembering).
