The Parental Cow actions are reading to me like boundary testing. They realize they can't prevent the wedding, but they're trying to figure out how much control they can have.

Here's the thing - if P-C's parents hadn't been all OH NOES WHITE DEVIL CANNOT ACKNOWLEDGE they could have had this discussion months and months ago, instead of four months before the wedding. I'm of the mind that this kind of bullshit is never. going. to. stop. and should not be taken into serious consideration, especially given their ultimatum.

Apparently they were also saying that he couldn't get married until I do (which, ha, like that's ever going to happen).

Yeah, from what I understand, there is less free time after you graduate med school and become an intern.

Also, I'm betting there are things planned for the wedding that would be stressful to reschedule. Finding a venue, cake, all that sort of stuff. Sure, they could cancel now and plan for a later date, but that's stress they don't need. My unsolicited advice: P-C's brother shouldn't go along with their demands.

So between my husband's grandmother's death and his potential layoff this week, we've both been kind of stressed. Apparently that manifested in heart palpitations for me today. They seem to have calmed down, and I've resolved to cut back on caffeine, and my need to take Sudafed last week probably didn't help, but still. What the hell, body? Cut me a break.

The other thing - and this kind of clinches my thoughts on the subject - is that there's no practical reason to postpone the wedding.

PC's parents want some sort of symbolic gesture indicating that their son is focused on finishing medical school. But does anybody really believe that getting married now is going to stop him from finishing medical school? Of course it won't. He's been living with her for a couple years now. It's better to do it now for PC's brother and his intended.

It's a stupid, onerous symbolic gesture that only matters to PC's parents and ultimately it only matters to them because its an impediment, an obstacle.

He should simply say, "I'm going to get married. And I'm going to finish medical school on time. These are not exclusive. This is my life. This is my wife. If you want to see the grandchildren then you will have to change. You've been nothing but hostile to this relationship. There's no reason for me to accommodate your wish when it is only a false, symbolic gesture, another obstacle. If you loved me, you would support me and my wishes and my choices."

And I agree that being in med school pretty much changes the calculus. I know someone who had her first kid while in med school and, looking at it after-the-fact, it seemed like perfect timing. Because residency is what sucks serious donkey balls.
