Buffy: He ran away, right? Giles: Sort of, more. turned and swept out majestically, I suppose. Said I didn't concern him. Buffy: So a mythic triumph over a completely indifferent foe? Giles: Well, I'm not dead or unconscious, so I say bravo for me.

And none of us deserving the cruelty or the grace -- Leonard Cohen

Happy Birthday, Emmett!

Now tagless for your comfort.

Happy Birthday, Emmett! Glad there is cake!

I'm on the radio! Talking derby of course.

Happy the piss is where is should be this morning and not on anyone!

Why do we even HAVE this age?

It's been the only thing that has given me second thoughts on evolution.

That man was going to shank me. Over an omelette. Two eggs and a slice of government cheese. Is that what my life is worth?

We just went through Ben's schedule at the open house

Last night was our open house, too. I had NO parents come for my first period, then I have 2nd and 3rd off. So, I got to sit around and twiddle my thumbs for 45 minutes.

Parents: what do you want to hear from your child's teacher when you come to open house? I'm always at a loss as to what to say.

Happy birthday, Emmett!!

Our Open House was last night, too. We just try to get a feel for the teacher and see how the kids are getting into the swing of things.

I'm not looking small interactions with the teachers help me get to know them a little better. I hope it's nice for the teacher to connect with us--and to put a face to the names.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

Why do real estate brokers think potential buyers want to see pictures of the toilet? Do they worry we'll assume that the half-bath might be missing that part? (See also, pictures of the corner of an empty room. What information is that supposed to convey?)

Because books.

ChiKat, I liked what Ben's history teacher did. He gave us his email, etc., and then took us briefly through the units they would cover, and what kind of work the kids would do in each. It's African-Asian History, so he made sure to point out what the kids typically really enjoy, what feels familiar -- the Biblical stuff when they get to the Hebrews, Egyptian mummies, etc. He was really personable and laid the year out simply, but with a lot of fun, too. (I would actually love to sit in on that class, to be honest.)

His biology teacher gave us a handout of grading expectations, etc., and the basic syllabus, and then showed us an awesome video Harvard did taking you inside a cell, and pointing out all the things the kids would learn as it ran. That was cool.

Okay, good. I just give a bit of my background, give my contact info and how to go to my web site for info, go over the skills we'll be covering in class, and the major units in the class. We only have 8 minutes so I can't say too much.

I hope it's nice for the teacher to connect with us--and to put a face to the names.

I do like meeting (most of) the parents. Maybe 15-20% of my students have their parents there. The ones that show are generally in the pile of good parents. (There are, obviously, good parents who don't come, too, but the negectful ones certainly don't come to open house.)

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

Parents: what do you want to hear from your child's teacher when you come to open house?

Quick rundown on how they're doing socially and academically. "Stephanie is a bit shy but she's got two close friends in Jessica and Msbelle. They play a lot of superheroes together. She's ahead of the class in reading but is lagging somewhat in quadratic equations. Also, I love her taste in Trapper Keepers."

an overblown libretto and a sumptuous score/ could never contain the contradictions I adore

Happy birthday, Emmett!

Yesterday when I took the kids out to the playground at work, I got a ton of mosquito bites THROUGH MY TIGHTS. WTF. When I swatted one of them, it exploded and I got blood on my new teal tights!

Our open house is run like a school schedule. The parents follow their child's schedule and meet in each class for 8 minutes. It's not a one-on-one conference with us. We do those in November and March.
