Well, I agree that they're unattractive. And definitely inappropriate for a public function where the wearer is also in a suit.
Me, I love my flip-flops but I'm not sure I'm ready for 5Fingers.

Mmm. I should put on my VFFs. It's a little too chilly for flip-flops.
I love flipflops. But the whole reason I like them is that my feet are essentially bare, and I can just kick them off.
DARN! I took my emergency pair home.
I found the 5 fingers to be more comfortable in theory than in practice, gave my pair away.
My feet are also wide and not very big. I don't anything that's going to make them look squarer.
Also, no way to show off toenail polish. Which is the whole point of feet, right?
I don't think I would like the sensation of having my toes all separated. My preferred sandals this summer were [link] The closest to a flip flop I can get without having to hold them on with my toes or hear the slapping sound. It's my favorite style of sandal.
I think the Vibram thingies are odd looking, but in a way that makes me smile a little. Like, "Hee! Toes!"
Not for the red carpet, though, Danny. Unless you had a doctor's note.
I tried on the Vibrams once. It was interesting. I could get used to it, but find them a bit weird (and possibly painful) for walking around the city--rocks! glass! curbs! I would stub all my foot.
Of course, at the moment, I am wearing slipper-like shoes that are fuzzy on the inside and barely have any structure. But it's COLD in my house today.
