mmm... beef jerky.

I have a meetup thing tonight. I don't want to go. I agreed weeks ago, but now I have remorse!

Tomorrow I have to enroll Grace in a different school for a Pre-K program. It's a school with WHITE KIDS! (and Asian kids) and kids who aren't super damaged. It's on a regular elementary campus.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

Sheesh, I'm getting background ads on another site for Showtime's Weeds and Big C and they're obviously paired together on purpose because Mary Louise Parker and Laura Linney are striking almost identical poses, bustalicious, tank tops, with the same flowy waves of hair. They're certainly attractive women, but the glamor angle is pretty far from what both shows are about. Seems like a marketing mistake.

They're smelly.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Ick, beef jerky.

Someone on IO9 asked me to write a guest piece for their sff blog, and this is what happened.

Enh. There aren't a lot of schools in the area with any white kids (less than 0.50% of the kids at my school are white). It's pretty surprising that she'll go to a school with 25% white kids (98 total).

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

Funny thing that happened on the way home last night from my friend Karen's 50th birthday party. (She's my friend who had breast cancer a couple years back.)

Emmett and I started riffing on Grandpa Simpson's "back in the day we wore an onion on our belt" and spent about forty minutes doing grumpy old guy improv about things like how we had to use Squirrels for contraception ("The squirrels didn't cotton to it, as you might imagine.") and everything resolved in either a dance craze or a panic.

It was fun. Nice having my teenager back. Also, he and Matilda have been playing up a storm and are just very cute together.

Matilda's incoming class at Grattan has a really odd demo. It's going to be 70% white, with no Chinese Americans. The main thing that seems to be contributing to that is that the other nearest school in the district has gone to a Chinese Immersion program which seems to have sucked up all the local Chinese American kids.

It's just very odd to have a 70% white class in the middle of the Haight which was traditionally a black neighborhood and is still very ethnically mixed. Also, I think more than half the teachers and staff at the school are Asian, probably Chinese American (guessing by name) so it's got to be weird for them too.

ita, that's a great post. Can I linkspam it? Do you want it associated with your LJ handle if I do?

Thanks! Feel free to linkspam it, Consuela, but don't tie it back to my LJ. Being so many people is confusing.

I remember the crazy days. 500 posts an hour. Nubmer! Natgbsb

My church's VBS starts this coming Sunday evening. I am Director, so this is my crunch week. I am creating volunteer spreadsheets and emailing people like mad. I have yet to meet one-on-one with the team leaders of 5 sections to make sure they have everything they need.
