I love the fact that our soccer team is the Chicago Fire. Don't know too many other cities that would name a pro sports team after a catastrophe.

Be proud of your Fire! The Hurricanes moved/renamed here the year after Hurricane Floyd came through, and there was a fair bit of, "maybe too soon?"... but by now they're just named after a season rather than a single event.

I like that the Canadiens are called the Habs, but which one was named first? In my head, if Vancouver was second, it was because they were listless and uninventive.

The Canucks are a relatively young team, from the 1970's expansion. Les Habitants have been around since the teens, '20s? ETA: Wikipedia says 1909 for The Candiens.

Definitely second. Canucks are a modern-era expansion team. The Habs go back nearly to the turn of the (last) century.

Well, Wikipedia tells me the first four NHL teams were Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators, and Quebec Bulldogs. So, one for the French, one for the random, one for the national capital, and one for Yale. Just kidding.
