So, if NPR had erred, what should they have done? Got more sources? Waited for a report from the doctor or hospital?

Tom, nope, not even the top right pile o'stuff. Other places they are not: anywhere on my desk or table beside desk, the stationary drawer, or my purse.

Pretty much what they did, IMO - reported what they had heard (given it was coming two plausible sources) with a ton of caveats around the general reliability of information in the midst of turmoil.
They were in a basket in the kitchen, you can all breathe a sigh of relief. whew, that was tense there for a bit.
