Well, the shucking had to be done quickly (since my mother would start the water to boil as my father went to pick the corn and then we had to shuck it by the time it reached boiling) so we made a race out of it. But the peas seemed to take forever.

I was just on a conference call with a guy in Atlanta who had to interrupt in the middle to tell us all he was watching out his window while a guy tried to dig his car out of the snow with a spoon.
A teaspoon or a tablespoon?
who had to interrupt in the middle
That's perfectly valid interrupting material.
I've had plenty of fresh peas. Unless they are gungo peas and cooked with rice, I ain't into it. And I guess those might be beans, but fuck off.
Yes.
Hee!
So I guess we're targeted to get this storm on Wednesday. (But it may miss us.) Which means it's pretty slow moving.

Now that's some fresh corn!! That's actually what Alton Brown recommends doing, to get the absolute freshest possible corn. Unfortunately, we no longer have access to a corn field next door--the closest we got was the small field between Grandma's house and my uncle's house about 100 yards away, where they grew sweet corn and various vegetables that all the aunts and uncles and cousins could come over and pick for their own when we had time. That's all been turned into a subdivision, along with the rest of the farm.
One of the saddest reactions I've ever seen from my mom was when we drove out to the old farmstead after the developers took it over. She and her sister could only figure out where the farmhouse was after they found the remnants of the stump where the big tree in their front yard had been.
We're supposed to get 1-3 inches tomorrow, but that's it for snow this week. However, Sunday is only supposed to be a high of 12 degrees, perfect for a Bears' playoff game!
during Portland's great snowmageddon of 2008 i watched one of my neighbors attempt to dig out his car with a cutting board. one of the flexible ones. i loaned him one of my shovels after marveling at that back-breaking ingenuity.
Good, Tom! More details to come via email.
WAIT. Is there some sort of snowstorm that will affect NY while I'm there? TELL ME NO.
