I think some stuff differs if you are married...but if it's a parent/adult child/sibling you aren't liable for anything unless you cosigned for it. But the creditors won't tell you that if they think you'll pay.

A friend of mine got his student loans discharged when he had AIDS. It was a year or two before he died, IIRC.

A lawyer once told me that Federal student loans also discharge at age 65. His goal was to make it to 65 without paying them back.
Didn't he promise to pay them back when he signed up for them? Assuming that he can afford to pay them back, is he saying his goal is to make it to 65 as a man who does not keep his word? I think he could have better goals.

Yes and Yes. He was sort of pathetic. I met this guy when I was a law student and I got to attend some big donor to the law school benefit. I was sort of bummed that the lawyer I got to network with was such a loser.

I was up until 6 am or so stressing about money. I would turn off the light, try to go to sleep, fail, turn on the light, read a relevant book or two, turn off the light, fail, get up, take a shower, go back to bed, fail, turn on the light, write down the crazy money-making ideas swirling in my head... you get the idea.
So now I've slept half the day away. Not ideal. But I'll make it work.
