Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

Our class song: "You can Ring My Bell" by Anita Ward.

My first favorite song!

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

Nothing like the complete eruption that took place when my best friend celebrated her birthday by having a sleep over and then having her parents take a group of pre-teen girls to the movies to see Purple Rain a few years later, but still!

Yeah, if I catch Purple Rain on cable and JZ is watching she gets a) transfixed; b) a look of mild guilty shame for all the dirty thoughts she's having about Prince during "I Would Die 4 U."

You would've loved my prom then.

I probably wouldn't have gotten it... much like I didn't get that song.

Some Keith Sweat came up on my iPod earlier when I was walking around, and I almost had to sit down.

The Best of Keith Sweat cd is the truth. That is in heavy rotation on my ipod. What I really wanted was for Make it Last Forever to be our prom theme. Sadly, it was not. I don't even remember what was.

I resisted the superiority of the Boyz II Men version of Can You Stand the Rain for a long, long time because how can you beat the Johnny Gill growl, right? I was only convinced because a friend of mine, slightly obssessed with Boyz II Men, made me sit down and listen to both versions back to back repeatedly. The NE version will always have my heart, but Boyz II Men killed it vocally. NE had some serious weak links in their vocal arsenal. (Biv and Devoe, I'm looking at you)

“Not dead yet!”

All born in the same year. All born in the midwest.

Yep. And all with MASSIVE tours in 1984/85. I still remember people practically selling their grandmothers in order to score tickets in the Purple Circle at the Orange Bowl. U2, Def Leppard and Bruce also had ginormous tours that year. It was a crazy year.

I had to pull out the music. All of these songs kill me so much.

The NE version will always have my heart, but Boyz II Men killed it vocally.

I'm sure that's true. But still.

I so did not get boy bands. I was busy drowning out my brother with U2, Siouxie, TMBG, NIN and (horrors to him) Tori Amos.

He still credits me with him knowing all the NIN lyrics. Head like a hole...

Crap, now I'm going to have to make a play list that runs New Edition through Jodeci.

Dude, the acapella that Boyz II Men pulled out for their version of that song is not to be trifled with. It's just a beautiful, beautiful thing.

Still love New Edition, though. Candy Girl is one of the most perfect pop songs ever.
