I followed this link from Glenn Greenwald's Salon column--it's a Daily Kos diary from a young man who decided to come out to his parents and what happened. It got me crying here at work!! Can you think of any trade secret case that has caught your attention in the past five years or so?

I dunno, in some ways the "translation" makes sense to me--it's just a form of modernizing it, like many of the "teen bibles" or whatever are. I guess it depends on how you present it--is it like, "ooh, this one is MORE ACCURATE!" or is it just "Hey, this is going to be more comprehensible to a modern audience"? Cause #1, not so much. #2, sure. The taking out stories, well...I'm no Bible literalist, so, I'm not going to argue with folks over what belongs there and what doesn't, but...

It's not just modernizing. One of the stated goals is to make it seem less "Socialist." So all the stuff about giving to the poor or about rich people being greedy or selfish is getting changed around, not for accuracy or comprehensibility, but for ideology.

And "Holy Ghost" just sounds lame....

Well it sounded perfectly fine until a few years ago. Now it inevitably conjures up an image of Eddie Izzard flapping his arms and running around the stage.

While "Holy Spirit" conjurs up images of Rowan Atkinson in full Church of England garb, sputtering, "In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spigot- Spirit!"

Neither are cases, but I was just reading that e coli article in the Times, and it mentioned that meat producers protect the ingredients in their ground beef as a trade secret. I thought that was very interesting, and it makes me think that if I knew, I would never eat ground beef again.

Also, similarly, Becel refuses to disclose the ingredients of it's spread as a trade secret, which makes my nutritionist friend very suspect of it and it's trans-fat free claims.

Huh. For a verse about Herod's daughter, they actually go back to the Greek word, note that it's usually translated "maiden" or "damsel," and then go ahead and put it as "temptress" anyway, to convey how immoral she was.

Ooh, riffing on what Sue says, don't modern wine makers put additives into the wine to improve the flavor?

Conservapedia guy talks about respectful language. He clearly disapproves of the KJV habit of using "which" rather than "who" when referring to people. And then, he comes out with this:
