It's not selfless if they instead launched a plan for him to play trojan horse. It's also lazy writing. If he's part of Jaiying's plot, don't show us the conversations that just don't happen to mention that they're colluding so we'll be "surprised" later.

It's entirely possible that Cal decided to play Trojan horse all on his own, given that he's kind of a loose cannon and hates Coulson. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised at all if Jiyaing agreed to Cal's "selfless" offer because she suspected he'd go all rage monster.

Perhaps Fury himself will show up again? I bet Phil's about to inherit an aircraft carrier.
